Thankyou.Thankyou.Thankyouforthatintroduction.First,IshouldsayafewwordsaboutwhoIamandwhatonearthI’mdoinguphere.

MynameisBono,andIamarockstar.Itellyouthisnotasaboastbutmoreasakindofconfeion.Becauseinmyviewtheonlythingworsethanarockstarisarockstarwithacocience,acelebritywithacause--oh,dear;oh,dear.Butworseyetisasingerwithacocience,aplacard-waving,knee-jerking,fellow-travelingactivistwithaLexusandaswimmingpoolshapedlikehishead.I’masinger.Youknowwhatasingeris.Asingerissomeonewithaholeinhisheartalmostasbigasthesizeofhisego.Whenyouneed20,000peoplescreamingyournameinordertofeelgoodaboutyourday,youknowyou’reasinger.

I’masinger.I’masongwriter.I’malsoafatherfourtimesover--justlastweek.IamafriendtoGod,aswornenemyofthesaccharineandabelieveringraceoverkarma.ItalktoomuchwhenI’mdrunkandsometimesevenwhenIamnot.Iamnotdrunkrightnow.Thesearenotsunglaetheseareprotection.ButImusttellyouthatIowemorethanmyoiledlifestyletorockmusic--Iowemyworldview.Musicwaslikeanalarmclockformeasateenagerandstillkeemeawakefromfallingasleepinthecomfortsofmyfreedom.

Rockmusictomeisrebelmusic.Butrebellingagaitwhat?Inthe50’sitwassexualmoresanddoublestandards.Inthe60’sitwastheVietnamWarandracialandsocialinequality.Whatarewerebellingagaitnow?IfIamhonest,I’mrebellingagaitmyownindifference.Iamrebellingagaittheideathattheworldisthewaytheworldisandthere’snotadamnedthingIcandoaboutit.SoI’mtryingtodoadamnedthing.Butfightingmyindifferenceismyownproblem.

What’syourproblem?What’stheholeinyourheart.Ineedthenoise,thealause.Youneededthegrades.WhyareyouhearinHarvardSquare?Whydoyouhavetolistentome?Whathaveyougivenuptogethere?Issucceyourdrugofchoice?Orareyoudrivenbyanothercuriosity?Yourpotential.Thepotentialofagivensituation.Ismiingthemomentunacceptabletoyou?Iswastingiirationacrimetoyou?Itisforthemusician.Ifthisiswherewefindourlivesrhyme,ifthisisourcommonground,well,then,Icanbeiiredaswellashumbledtobeonthisgreatcampusbecausethat’swhereIcomefrom--music.

ButI’veseentheothersideofmusic--thebusine.I’veseensucceasadrugofchoice.I’veseengreatmindsandprolificimaginatiodisaearuptheirowna,strung-outontheirownself-importance.I’moneofthem.I’veseenthemiseryofhavingitallyourownway,thelonelineofsittingatatablewhereeverybodyworksforyou;theemptineofarrivingatAenonaGulfstreamtostayinyourwinter--oh,holdothat’sadifferenteech.

YouknowwhatI’mtalkingabout.Butyou’vegottokeepaskingyourself,"Whyareyoudoingthis?"You’vegottakeepcheckingyourmotives.Succeformygroup,U2,hasbeenaloteasiertoconjurethan,say,relevance--relevanceintheworld,relevanceintheculture.That’sdifficult.And,ofcourse,failureisnotsuchabadthing.It’snotawordthatmanyofyouknow.I’msureitswhatyoufearthemost,actually.Butfromanartist’spointofview,failureisgoingtogetyourbestmaterial.

Letmetellyouafewthingsyouhaven’theardaboutme,evenontheInternet.LetmetellyouhowIenrolledatHarvardandsleptwithaneconomicprofeor.That’sright.IbecameastudentatHarvardrecently,andIcametoworkwithProfeorJeffreySachsatCID[CenterforInternationalDevelopment]tostudythelackofdevelopment--thelackofdevelopmentinthird-worldeconomiesduetothecrushingweightofolddebtsthoseeconomieswerecarryingforgeneratio.

Youseeitturoutthatthenormalrulesofbankruptcydon’talytosovereignstates.ItwouldbeharderforyoutogetastudentloanthanitwasforthelikesofPresidentMo bututostreambillioofdollarsintohisSwibankaccountwhilehis[Congolese]peoplestarvedonthesideoftheroad.Twogeneratiolater,theCongolesearestillpaying.Thedebtsofthefathersarenowthedebtsofthesoandthedaughters.

SohereIwas,representingagroupthatbelievedallsuchdebtsshouldbecancelledintheyear20__.WecalleditJubilee20__.Afreshstartforanewmilleium.

ItwasheadedupbyAePettiforbasedoutofLondon--withhugesuortfromAfricaandthe[unintelligible].WithMuhammadAli,SirBobGeldof,andmyselfacting,atfirst,justasmouthpieces.Itwastakingoff.ButwewerewaybehindintheU.S.

Wehadthemelodyline,sotoeak.Butinordertogetitontheradiooverhere,weneededalotofhelp.MyfriendBoyShriversuggestedIknockonthegoodprofeor’sdoor.Andafuythinghaened.JeffreySachsnotonlyletmeintohisoffice,heletmeintohisRolodex,hishead,andhislifeforthelastfewyears.Soinaseeheletmeintoyourlife,hereatHarvard.Astudent,Bono,again--Iwasthreeweeksinacollegebeforethis,allright?

SothenSachsandI,withmyfriendBoyShriver,hittheroadlikesomesortofsurrealcrooveract.Arockstar,aKeedy,anotedeconomistcricroingtheglobelikethePartridgeFamilyonychotropicdrugs.WehadthePopeactingasourkindofagent.Wehadthebleingofvariousrais,evangelists,mothersunio,tradeunioandPTAs.

Itwasanewlevelof"unhip"forme,butitwasverycool.ItwasinthatcapacitythatIsleptwithJeffSachs,eachofusinourownseatonaneconomyflighttosomewhere,paedoutlikeacoupleofdrunks,butfromsheerexhaustion.Itwasconfusingforeveryone.Ilookedupwithoneeyetoseeyourhero,stuleinallthewrongplaces,histielookinglikeaheadband.AnairhosteaskedifhewereamemberoftheGratefulDead.(It’smoreofamop-topsituationtoday.)

Anyway,IhaveenormousreectforJeffSachs,butit’sreallytruewhattheysay:"Studentsshouldneversleepwiththeirprofeors."SowhileI’mhandingouttradesecrets,IalsowanttotellyouthatLarrySummers,yourincomingPresident,themanwhosesignatureisoneveryAmericandollar--well,hetooisanutcase--andafreak.

U2madeitbigoutofBoston--notNewYork,notLA.SoIthoughtifanyonewouldknowaboutourexistenceitwouldbeaTreasurySecretaryfromHarvard.No.WhenIsaidIwasfromU2hehadaflashbackfromCuba,1962.HowcanIputthis?Anddon’tholditagaithim--Mr.Summersis,asformerPresidentClintonconfirmedtomelastweekinDublin,"culturallychallenged."

ButwhenIaskedhimtolookupfrom"thenumbers"toseewhatweweretalkingabout,hedidmorethanthat.HedidthehardestthingofallforanEconomist;hesawthroughthenumbers.AndifitwashardformetoenlistLarrySummersinourefforts,imaginehowharditwasforLarrySummerstogettherestofWashingtontocoughupthecash--toreallymakeadifferenceforthethirdoftheworldthatlivesonlethanadollaraday.Wellhemorethantried.Hewaspaionate.Heturnedupintheofficesofhisadversaries.Heturnedupinrestaurantswithme,arockstar,tomeettheconcerofhisRepublicancounterparts...counterparts...contra-parts...?

ThereisaposhrestaurantinWashingtonwheretheywillnotletusinnow.Suchwastheheatofhisdebate--bloodonthewalls,wineinthevinegar.

Ifyou’recalledupbeforethenewPresidentofHarvardandhegivesyouahairyeyeball,drumshisfingers,andgenerallyactsdisinterested,letmetellyouitcouldbethebegiingofagreatadventureforyou.(It’sagoodthingIgotherebeforePresidentRudetinehandsoverthe--uh,anyway....)

ItisatthispointIhavetoask--ifyourfamilieshaven’talready--whyamItellingyouthesestories?It’scertainlynotbecauseI’mruingforrolemodel.I’mtellingyouthesestoriesbecauseallthefunIhadwithJeffreySachsandLarrySummerswasintheserviceofsomethingdeadlyserious.Whenpeoplearoundtheworldhearabouttheburdenofdebtthatcrushesthepoorestcountries,whentheyhearthatforeverydollarofgovernmentaidwesendtodevelopingnatio,ninedollarscomesbacktousindebtservicepayments--didyouhearthat?Foreveryonedollaringovernmentaidwes endtothesenatio,wereceivenineindebtservicepayments--whenpeoplehearthat,theygetangry.

Infact,theymorethangotangry.Theytooktothestreetsinwhatwaswithoutdoubtthelargestgrarootsmovementsincethecampaigntoendapartheid.Politics,asyouknow,isnormallytheartofthepoiblebutthiswassomethingmoreinteresting.Thiswasbecomingtheartoftheimpoible.Wehadpriestsgoingintopulpitwehadpopstarsgoingintoparliaments.ThePopeputonmysunglaesforaphotoseion--neverreleased,bytheway.TheVaticandidn’thavethesameseeofhumorasthePontiff.Buthewascool.

Yeah,wehadthePopeputtingonsunglaewehadthereligiousrightactinglikestudentprotesters.Andfinally,afterafloorfightintheHouseofRepresentatives,wegotthemoney--4-3-5million.Andmoreimportantly--’causethisisstartingtoadduptoalotofmoney--moreimportantly,thisleveragedbillioofdollarsfromotherrichcountries.

So,wheredidthatmoneygo?Well,sofar,23ofthepoorestcountriesontheplanethavemanagedtomeetthesometimesover-stringentconditiotogettheirdebtpaymentsreduced--andtoendthemoneyonthepeoplewhoneeditmost.InUganda,twiceasmanykidsarenowgoingtoschool.That’sgood.InMozambique,debtpaymentsaredown42percent,allowinghealthendingtoincreaseby14milliondollars.That’sgood--14milliondollarsgoesalongwayinMozambique.

...Tomakeitmoresortofreal,justonelittlestoryaboutaremarkablemaninruralUganda--Dr.Kabira.In1999,measles--adiseasethat’salmostunheardofintheU.S.--killedhundredsofkidsinDr.Kabira’sdistrict.Now,thankstodebtrelief,he’sgotanadditional$6,000fromthestate,enoughforhimtoemploytwonewnursesandbuytwonewbicycles,sothattheycangetaroundthedistrictandimmunizethechildren.Lastyear,measleswasakiller.Thisyear,Dr.Kabirasawlethantencases.That’sgood.

IjustwantedyoutoknowwhatwepulledoffwiththehelpofHarvard--withthehelpofpeoplelikeJeffreySachs,sittingrightthere.I’mnotheretobrag,ortotakecredit,oreventoshareit,actually.Andnotjusttosay"thanks."IthinkI’vecomehereforanotherreason.thinkI’vecomeheretoaskyouforyourhelpbecausethisisabigproblemandweneedsomesmartpeopleworkingonit.Ithinkthatthiswillbethedefiningmomentofourage.Whenthehistorybooks(thatsomeofyouwillwrite)makerecordsofthismomentintime,wewillberememberedfortwothings:theInternet,probably,andtheeverydayholocaustthatisAfrica:25millionHIVpositiveswhowillleavebehind40millionAIDSorphaby20__insub-SaharanAfricaalone.ThisisthebiggesthealththreatsincetheBubonicPlaguewipedoutathirdofEurope.Andthisishaeningrightnowinourtime.

It’sanuustainableproblemforAfricaand,unlewehermeticallysealthecontinentandcloseourcocience,it’sanuustainableproblemfortheworld.Butit’shardtomakethisapopularcause.It’shardtomakeitpop,youknow?AndIguethat’swhatmyjobi’causepopisoften,sadlyoften,theoxygenofpolitics.

Didn’tJohnandRobertKeedycometoHarvard?I’tequalityasonofabitchtofollowthroughon.I’t"Lovethyneighbour"intheglobalvillagesoinconvenient?Godwritesustheselines,butwehavetosingthem--takethemtothetopofthecharts.Butitsnotwhattheradioisplaying,isit?Iknow.Iknow.

Butwe’vegottofollowthroughonouridealsorwebetraysomethingattheheartofwhoweare.Outsidethesegates,andevenwithinthem,thecultureofidealismisundersiege,besetbymaterialismandnarciismandalltheother"isms"ofindifference--andtheirdefeemechanisms:knowingne,thesmirk,thejoke.Worsestill,idealismisbeingreducedtoamarketingtool.They’vegotMartinLutherKingsellingphonesnow.Haveyouseenthat?[unintelligible]

CivilRightsinAmericaandEuropeareboundtohumanrightsintherestoftheworld.Humanrights:therighttolivelikeahuman.Butthesethoughtsareexpeive;they’regoingtocostus.Arewereadytopaytheprice?IsAmericastillagreatideaaswellasagreatcountry?

WhenIwasakidinDublin,IwatchedinaweasAmericaputamanonthemoon.Wetho ugh,youknow,thisis"mad."NothingisimpoibleinAmerica.InAmerica,theycandoanythingoverthere.Nothingwasimpoible--onlyhumannature.Anditfollowedbecauseitwasled.Isthatstilltrue?Tellmeit’strue.It’struei’tit?Andifiti’t,youofallpeoplecanmakeittrueagain.
