Born into a wealthy family with a well pronounced rich lineage, the leading heroine, Emily Grierson, was nurtured in a relatively closed environment. During that pre-war period, people seemed to hold a respectful manner towards Southern women, however, what truly flooded through in their blood remained to be the ideologism towards feudal tradition. So Emily’s life was characteristic of misery, loneliness as well as hollowness, all of these could be ascribed to the discrimination and oppression brought by the male-dominated society, which later transformed into three sharp thorns that kept the outsiders away and unfolded her tragic story.

As to the father-daughter relationship, we could draw a clear clue from the tableau depicted within the story, their positions delivered a vivid message that Mr. Grierson was in the dominant position while Emily was blocked from the outside world and played a subordinate role, as being hidden behind his back. Living under the wing of her rigid and stubborn father, all the outside connections have been cut out, which led to her disjoint of the society. Maybe once she could have been a delicate and charming rose until the sharp thorn, symbolized by his absolute authority and unbelievable control, has intimidated others away while the rose itself faded away in hushed silence.

However, her father’s death didn’t free Emily of those manacles, since the fetters over her mind could never be eliminated. While he was alive, he meant the whole world to her and was the only media through which she could have some faint understanding of the outside world. So his sudden death was too much for her to accept, the sadness and fear too heavy a burden for this vulnerable rose to bear. She even couldn’t find a way to abreact her sorrows, but her hollow eyes told us everything.

Then the appearance of Homer Baron cast a dim light in her life and excited her lust for love, which had long been suppressed, to burst out just in a wink. However, this crazy love only ushered in a new page of tragedy. Just like her dependence on her father, she began to count on him, endure his control and oppression, and later his abandoning. Meanwhile, their love was so offensive and insulting to her inherited noble status that criticism and pressure started to pour in. Unfortunately, the exchange of her deep love for him was just disappointment and heartbreak, his betrayal again brought her endless misery, dwelling in which she finally lost herself and chose the most extreme way to be with her lover forever.

During this time, the delicate little rose again got trapped by another sharp thorn---- her inappropriate love for an inappropriate guy. This affair has turned all the respect and affection before to disgust and loathe, which again shut her last window towards the outside.

Since then, she became more and more twisted and eccentric. She finally chose to escape from the world since it seemed to be the only way to maintain her noble image. Actually, the root of her tragedy not only came from the two men in her life, but also from the town, since the old ideas and traditions which it had stuck to had long been suppressing and chewing her fragileroseleaves”. It was a major sharp thorn that not only kept Emily in isolation but also pierced deep into her own fragile soul at last.

Being as an embodiment of old orders, old moral standards as well as old traditions, Emily can be treated as an epitome of the entire Southern society. While sticking to these noble values, she in turn was subject to their tortures and finally became a sacrifice of them. All in all, the whole story was delicate and perfect, just like the carved patterns on the marbles, enjoying a monumental status just like Emily herself.
