Yu hong is a member of the Tibet Horsemanship Team. On July 26, 1999, he beat all others to become champion at the national horsemanship Obstacle Race held in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. The success made it possible for him to represent China in the Asian Horsemanship Obstacle Race, held in Japan in October 1999.

NATIVE OF NEDONG. His Tibetan name being Sangpei, Yu Hong was born in Nedong County, Shannan Prefecture, in 1974. At the age of 16, he was enrolled in the Tibet Horsemanship Team, and received training for two years. In 1992, he and other team members moved to Beijing for advanced training, arranged in accordance with international standards, for nine years.

Yu Hong proved to be a genius in horsemanship, and this won favor from his coaches.

RETURN TO TIBETAN TEAM. The late 10th Panchen Erdeni founded the Tibet Horsemanship Team in 1986. All the horses were donations from his followers. Today, however, these horses have been returned to the grasslands. Now, the horses are bought from New Zealand.

When the horsemanship team was first set up, it was given a chance to attend competition once a year. For this purpose, horses have to be shipped to the destination seven or eight days in advance, which was very expensive.

But, after moving to Beijing in 1992, the team had more chance to become involved in competition more cheaply.

The team now has some 60 members, including over 30 horsemen. Some of have become State team members.

Once, Yu Hong was invited to join the Guangdong team, and promised a bonus of 400,000 Yuan if he won a competition, but he chose to stay with the Tibetan team. He is one of the best horsemen in China. Given his success, Yu Hong is today the manager, a coach and a horseman of the Tibetan team.

Based in the Beijing training center, however, all the team members became nostalgic for the trees, mountains, rivers and almost everything back in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Dainzin, one of them, married a Tibetan girl. When his wife followed him to Beijing, she was surprised to find a total lack of Tibetan utensils in the training center. “Isnt this my home? she exclaimed, adding: “No kadian cushions!

However, these Tibetans remain in the Beijing training center.

During the period, Yu Hong emerged as a victorious horseman.

In 1991, he became the Tibetan teams first national champion;

In 1993, he placed sixth in the 7th National Games while his team won the fourth place;

In 1998, he came second in a national competition held to select athletes to attend the Asian Games;

In 1999, he came first in the national best horsemen championship;

In 2000, he was champion in a national competition held in Shanghai, and his team, representing China, won second place in an international horsemanship tournament held in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region;

In 2000, he himself took the first place in the East Asian Horsemanship Obstacle Race (as a member of the Chinese team); and

In 2000, he was champion in the national horsemanship obstacle race held in Guangzhou.
