All contact channels between China and the West are collectively called the Silk Road. In addition to land transportation, there is a sea route to the West, namely, the Maritime Silk Road. The history of China exchanging material culture with neighboring countries through the Maritime Silk Road is as long as that through the Continental Silk Road. Through the Maritime Silk Road, China’s silk, porcelain, tea and other products are transported westward by way of Southeast Asia to West Asia, North Africa, as well as Europe and America, activating the economic and trade contacts of all countries coastwise.

China is an ancient maritime country. Ocean is a “Blue State Territory” where Chinese nation lives on. The blue ocean not only provides a broad living space for the people living in coastal areas, and brings abundant food resources to them. More importantly, the blue ocean helps Chinese nation expanding exchanges and cooperation with various countries worldwide. Though it started with silk trade, its significance is far beyond this.

The Maritime Silk Road is divided into the routes of the East China Sea and the South China Sea. The South China Sea route starts from China’s south port city C Guangzhou, connecting southward to Southeast Asia, by way of the Strait of Malacca to Peninsula of India; then passing through the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, it finally reaches the Arab countries. In the Yuan Dynasty, the route was extended to Africa then it already sailed to the America in the Ming Dynasty. In that period, western arts such as music, dance, painting, sculptures and architectures, the science knowledge of Arab such as astronomy, calendar and medical science, as well as the religions in the West, East and South Asia, including Islam, Buddhism, Manichaeism, Nestorianism, etc. were introduced in China by sea. Transformed by Chinese culture, they were integrated with traditional culture and became an important part of Chinese culture. The East China Sea route started from Dengzhou and Laizhou, Shandong, originally, by way of the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese Archipelago. Through the Maritime Silk Road, Chinese culture was spread all over the world. After spread abroad, Chinese Confucianism plays a decisive role in North Korea, Japan and Vietnam. The ancient civilization is inherited continuously via this road. Chinese civilization, ancient Indian and Egyptian civilizations, Persian and Arabic civilizations, as well as Incan civilization of America converge here. With communication, civilizations shine. With integration, culture influences the world.

The influence of the Maritime Silk Road on China is valuable not only in ancient times, but also in contemporary China. Now China’s 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Economic Belt not only has become a booster for China to realize national rejuvenation, but also will benefit many countries along the road, making a contribution to promotion of inter-regional cooperation. In recent years, China’s trade volume with the ASEAN countries has reached over USD 400 billion, part of which was achieved by sea route. Maritime trade is an important approach for achieving China-ASEAN cooperation. Through the Maritime Silk Road, China is linked with the world. The Maritime Silk Road represented by eight Chinese “Maritime Silk cities”, Shanghai, Penglai, Yangzhou, Ningbo, Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, Guangzhou and Beihai, has promoted the exchange between Chinese and foreign cultures, enhanced the friendship between Chinese and foreign people, enriched the connotation of Chinese culture, and propelled the progress of world civilizations. It is of distinctive cultural features concerning peace, development, exchange and mutual benefit.

Cities along the 21st century maritime silk road C shanghai

The rapid rise of Shanghai in a century in modern times is a miracle in China’s urban development history. Shanghai owns profound modern urban cultural deposits and numerous historical sites, and integrates the traditional culture of Wu and Yue with diverse cultures brought in by immigrants from various regions to form a unique Shanghai-style culture. Culture is the life of a city. A city with culture is a city with life. Shanghai-style culture is the source of Shanghai’s vitality and vigor.

If Beijing-style culture is traditional, Shanghai-style culture is traitorous and unique, namely a combination of Chinese and Western cultures which is filled with commercial and folk elements. In the period of the Republic of China, a famous reporter Cao Juren of Shanghai made a vivid comment: Beijing-style culture is like a young lady of an eminent family while Shanghai-style culture is like a modern girl.

Fashionable and chic modern sense is related to the natural geographical convenience of Shanghai. Located at the estuary of the Yangtze River, Shanghai faces the East China Sea in the east and Kyushu, Japan across the sea, adjoins Hangzhou Bay in the south, and is connected with Jiangsu and Zhejiang in the west to constitute China’s largest economic zone -- Yangtze River Delta Economic Circle led by Shanghai. The geographical advantages brought by the ocean provide Shanghai with huge strength for attracting foreign capitals and cultures.

As the important eastern gate of the Maritime Silk Road, in 2010, Shanghai successfully held 2010 World Expo, Shanghai International Festival of Arts, Shanghai International Film Festival and other large-scale cultural exchange activities. The multi-culture of the international metropolis creates the inclusive and open city characters of Shanghai. Shanghai-style culture represented by Shanghai will continue being influential and radiant, and will stimulate the economic circle of publishing industry in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai wholly.

On May 20, 2014, the 4th CICA Summit was held in Shanghai. The large-scale multimedia dances In Pursuit of the Silk Road C Sea and In Pursuit of the Silk Road C Land formed the epic dance In Pursuit of the Silk Road, which reproduced the development history as well as the grand and prosperous trade scene of the Maritime Silk Road.

In August, during the Shanghai Book Fair, there was a veritable “Golden Week of Culture” in Shanghai. Seeing the passion for reading of the city, the Nobel laureate in literature Naipaul who came from afar, gasped in admiration, “Shanghai is a city of full-bodied literature atmosphere.” Listening to a lecture in an old building with flickering shadows of Chinese parasol trees outside is pleasant. During the week in the Shanghai Book Fair, people put down their mobile phones and threw themselves into reading; during the week, different cultures, races, thoughts and voices collided with each other. Various reflection and discussion, instead of focusing on the book fair only, aim at probing into the future reading and possible lifestyles.
