四、阅读理解(共15小题,每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列材料,从各小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出一个最佳答案。
A
Cathy and Sally are both friends of mine. But they are very different. For instance, the other day the three of us were going to the movies. “Do I look okay?” I asked Sally. Without even so much as looking at me, she replied, “Yeah, sure. You always look great.” “How about my hair?”, “Yeah. Looks great,” she responded.
At that moment Cathy walked in. She took a look at me and asked, “You’re not going to be seen in that, are you?” “What’s wrong with it?” I asked. “Well, for one thing, you look like a little kid in it, and for another, there’s a stain (污渍) on the left sleeve.” She paused, frowned (皱眉) and then added, “Having a bad hair day?”
So you can see how different they are. Sally is a person who doesn’t want to upset you, so she always says something nice and would never want to make you feel uneasy. Cathy is very blunt (直率的) and outspoken(口无遮拦的). She has very definite (绝对的) opinions and isn’t afraid of what you’ll think about what she has to say. So if I really want to know how I look, while I ask them both, it’s Cathy’s advice that’s worth the most. She has no problem telling me her honest opinion about anything. If the way I look passes her check, I can be sure that it will pass with others. Now, if I were worried about a big test at school, I’d go to Sally for help. Cathy puts as little energy as possible into her grades. Sally, on the other hand, is very smart, and can get good grades, and will help you out when you need it. So both Cathy and Sally are my good friends, each in their own ways.

Mary is a lovely, quiet girl. When she was a little girl, she had no secrets from her mother, who was very pleased with her. But since last year she has become a little mysterious and not so open as before. She wants heart-to-heart talks between mother and daughter. But they never happen. And a gulf opens between them.
Her mother wonders if she falls in love. It’s too early for a girl for her age. After all, she is reaching the “dangerous stage”. These thoughts have caused trouble in the mother’s mind.
One weekend Mary came to tell mother her that she was going to the cinema with her classmates and would return late. This was the first time her mother agreed, and she began to worry because her daughter had never been away at night before. The mother waited until nine and couldn’t fall asleep. Then she decided to go out to meet her daughter. Just at that moment, she heard the noise of a car and hurried to the window―there was her daughter, waving goodbye to a boy. Her heart missed a beat. When the daughter came in, the mother was watching TV, pretending nothing happened. “Mum, I’m back.” “Yes.” “Sorry to be late.”
The daughter said nothing about the film and the boy. The mother really would like to know something about them. “Who is that boy?” Mary was stunned (发愣的) for a moment. “Ah, it’s my monitor. He gave me a lift on his way home. Mum, I’m going to bed,” the daughter answered in careful words. “All right. Go to sleep early.”
The next morning when the mother went to her daughter’s room to do some tidying-up, she found her diary left on her bed. After a few minutes’ hesitation (犹豫), she opened it to the right page. It reads: “Mum, it’s love that made you ask, but it would show your understanding of me if you hadn’t.” Holding the diary, the mother fell into thought.
