Taiwan at a Glance

Taiwan is an island of about 36,000 square kilometers located off the southeastern coast of Mainland China, southwest of Okinawa[冲绳岛] and north of Philippines[菲律宾]. Shaped roughly like a tobacco[烟草] leaf that is narrow at both ends, Taiwan is home to more than 22 million people and is one of the most densely[密集地] populated places in the world. Besides its crowded cities and friendly people, the island is also known for steep mountains and lush[青葱的] forests. It is reputable as a “Mountainous Island.The island is spotted with numerous mountains over 3,000 meters.

Besides mountains, beautiful coastal scenes are also part of Taiwan’s great natural assets[财富]. Legendary tales depict[描写] the subtle[精致的] beauty of Alishan National Scenic Area, where you can enjoy the relaxing scene of sunrise and cloud sea注1. Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area is nestled in lofty[高高的] mountains in Nantou County注2, which is famous for its mountain scenery and is the only county in Tai wan without a coastline. This lake is famous for its clear sparkling[闪烁的] blue water and picturesque[独特的] mountain backdrop. Penghu National Scenic Area, comprising[由……组成] of 64 islets[小岛], is scattered[分散] around the Taiwan Strait. Flat landscape makes it different from Taiwan Island. It is blessed with the most spectacular view in Taiwan. What’s more, the National Palace Museum, located in the outskirts[市郊] of Taipei City, is home to the essence[精华] of five thousand years of Chinese history. It has the finest collections of Chinese Arts, providing an eye-opening experience of Chinese culture.

If this is your first visit to Taiwan, you will most certainly be amazed at the diversity of things this beautiful island has to offer, as a rich historical background has provided Taiwan with a multifaceted[多面的] culture. People from many different places, such as Taiwan’s indigenous people, the southern Fujianese from early China, Hakka[客家] immigrants[移民], the Dutch, Spanish and Japanese as well as the recent immigrants from mainland China, have all played a role in Taiwan’s development.

Taiwan has many large cities and towns. Taipei is the center of politics, commerce and culture. It is home to the world’s currently tallest skyscraper[摩天楼], Taipei 101注3. This was the first world’s tallest building completed in the 21st century, surpassing[超过] the height of the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur in October 2003. Kaohsiung is the second-largest city on the island. It has one of the busiest seaports in the world and it has the island’s second-largest airport, Kaohsiung International Airport. Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan and was the capital during imperial[皇帝的] times. It is famous for its temples and other historic buildings. And Hsinchu is a center of hi-tech industry, and one of the world’s leading manufacturers[制造商] of hi-tech components[成分].

Taiwan is not only somewhere you can experience the amazement of Chinese culture, but also a paradise for gourmands[美食者]. True gourmets know that only in Taiwan is it possible to enjoy fine authentic[真实的] cuisine[烹饪] from all the different regions of China. Foreign food from all over the world has also made their appearance in Taiwan. Not only that, if you try the world-famous Taiwanese native cuisine just once, you will remember it forever.

台湾是一个占地约三万六千平方公里的小岛，位于中国的东南海面上，日本冲绳的西南面及菲律宾的北面。其南北两端狭窄，形如一片烟草叶。台湾拥有两千二百万人口，是世界上人口最密集的地区之一。除了拥挤的城市和友善的人们，这个小岛还以陡峭的高山与青葱的森林著称。它被誉为“高山之岛”，岛上遍布众多海拔三千米以上的高山。
