【摘要】埃德加・爱伦・坡(1809-1849) 是美国著名诗人,他的诗歌形式精美,辞藻华美,音韵优美。Annabel Lee被认为是他最好的一首诗,也是其绝笔之作,在诗中作者悼念了亡妻弗吉尼娅(virginia)。本文旨在通过分析这首诗的内容和修辞来赏析其中的格律和音韵美。

埃德加・爱伦・坡(1809-1849) 是美国著名诗人,小说家,文艺评论家和现代侦探小说的创始人。63首诗外加一出没写完的诗剧,这就是爱伦・坡留给世人的全部诗歌作品。然而坡的文学生涯却是始于诗歌并终于诗歌,而且他也首先把自己视为一名诗人。爱伦・坡的作品形式精美,辞藻华美,音韵优美,对他来说,写诗本身不是一种目的,而是表现一股强烈感情,表现美的节奏。所以评论家们在把他归入浪漫派、歌特派、颓废派或象征派的同时,都]忘记说他有唯美主义倾向。坡主张写“纯小说”、“纯诗歌”。他认为艺术就是创造美,认为美是艺术的基调和本质,认为艺术的本源是人类对美的渴望。他在《诗歌原理》中说:“如果一个人仅仅是用诗来再现他和世人一样感知到的那些景象、声音、气味、色彩和情趣,不管他的感情有多么炽热,不管他的描写有多生动,我都得说他还不能证明他配得上诗人这个神圣的称号”。诗歌annabel lee被认为是他最好的一首诗,也是其绝笔之作,在诗中作者悼念了亡妻弗吉尼娅(virginia),但并未使用真实姓名和背景,而是选用了其它的名字和想象的一个“海边的国度”。坡在诗中为他们的爱情加入了一些神秘的色彩,他相信只有在古老而又神秘的时代才有真正的爱情。全诗如下:

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

By the name of Annabel Lee;――

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,

In this kingkom by the sea,

But we loved with a love that was more than love―

I and my Annabel Lee;

With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven

Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,

A wind blew out of a cloud by night

Chilling my Annabel Lee;

So that her highborn kinsmen came

And bore her away from me,

To shut her up,in a sepulchre

In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels,not half so happy in Heaven,

Went envying her and me:――

Yes! that was the reason (as all men know,

In this kingdom by the sea )

That the wind came out of the cloud,chilling

And killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love

Of those who were older than we――

Of many far wiser than we――

And neither the angels in Heaven above

Nor the demons down under the sea

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:

For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And the stars never rise but I see the bright eyes

Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And so,all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling,my darling, my life and my bride

In her sepulchre there by the sea――

In her tomb by the side of the sea.

一、内容

诗歌的大意是:很久很久以前,在海边的某一国度里,诗人与一位名叫Annabel Lee的少女深深相爱,尽管他们还是少年,但是他们的爱情却超出常人之恋甚至遭到天使的忌妒,于是天使借助寒风夺去了少女Annabel Lee的性命。但是,在诗人的心目中,他与Annabel Lee的爱情却是神圣的、浓厚的、永存的。无论是天堂的天使,还是地狱的恶魔,他们可以夺去情人的性命,却不可以夺走他们彼此深深相爱的心灵。明澈的月光伴诗人梦见美丽的Annabel Lee,闪烁的星光使诗人仿佛看见了Annabel Lee那双明亮的眼睛。每当夜幕降临,海潮涨起之时,诗人便来到海边情人的墓地,与她相伴,与她共眠,与她一起聆听那大海的涛声。诗歌纯洁,完美,极富想象力。贯穿全诗的是忧伤,悲愤和无尽的爱恋。诗人用词独特,以讲述神话的形式将读者带到一个在时间和空间上都很遥远的美妙世界:

It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

二、格律

全诗共41行,分为6节,每节主要由长短行交替构成,长行诗通常由9~11个音节组成,短行一般为6~8个音节。错落有致的诗行不禁使人联想起波涛起伏的大海,在诵读中仿佛置身于海边亦真亦幻的浪漫情境。除最后一节是以抑抑扬格三音步、四音步的诗句构成,总的来说,该诗并没有固定的韵律。它突破了传统的五步抑扬格,在形式上显得更加自由洒脱。抑抑扬格即每个音步由两个非重读音节加上一个重读音节组成。似乎在向读者倾诉一段美好、圣洁而又古老的的爱情故事,但节奏却铿锵有力、顿挫分明,使读者体味到全诗那乐曲般节奏强烈的美妙韵律,也营造出一种哀婉回旋的旋律。该诗最后一节为:

从整体上分析,全诗分六个小节,其韵律方式为二句一押韵。如第一小节:

It was many and many a year ago, a

In a kingdom by the sea, b

That a maiden there lived whom you may knowa

By the name of Annabel Lee;― b

And this maiden she lived with no other thought c

Than to love and be loved by me。 b

三、音韵

英诗的音乐性除体现在节奏、韵律等方面外,还表现在音韵上。音韵是通过重复使用相同或相近的音素而产生的,是构成诗歌的音乐美和艺术情趣的重要元素。在这首诗中,坡采用了包括尾韵、句内韵、头韵和半谐韵在内的多种音韵形式。

1. 尾韵(End Rhyme)

《安娜贝尔・李》的尾韵除最后两节有稍许变化外,每隔一行押/i: /韵。押韵的词分别为sea, Lee,me。诗歌的节奏性很大程度上依靠尾韵。整齐的尾韵使诗歌读起来朗朗上口,十分悦耳。英语诗歌的格律也并不总是固定和绝对工整的,无论是在音步的数目还是在格律的形式上都经常会有变化,正是这些变化丰富了英语诗歌的表现形式。该诗在第五节中单词me没有按照押韵的规则出现,取而代之的是单词we。

2. 句中韵( Internal Rhyme)

诗中多次出现的句中韵,其中第四节第六行:

And killing my Annabel Lee.

其中chilling 和killing为句中韵 ;第五节第六行:

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

其中ever和 dissever为句中韵;这首诗的最后一节出现了两处句中韵:beams和 dreams,rise和 eyes。

3. 头韵(Alliteration)和半谐韵(Assonance)

头韵和半谐韵的作用大致相同。它们不仅是实现一首诗音韵美的重要手段,还可以把有关的词联系起来。这首诗的第四节第一行:

The angels, not half so happy in heaven

词句中的half、happy和 heaven就使用了头韵,字母开头辅音/h/的重复出现。在第五节第五行中:“Nor the demons down under thesea”,“demon down”的起首辅音/d/是爆破音,它读起来使人产生一种生硬感,从而将诗人对恶魔的鄙夷和憎恨表现无余。诗中半谐韵的巧妙运用不仅增添了其音乐美,还增强了诗歌的表现力。在第六节第五、六行:

And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling, my darling, my life and my bride,

其中元音/ai/的多次重复出现,半谐韵“life”和“bride”。

诗歌在任何国家的语言里都被认为是思维表达的最高形式。它那谐美的音韵,严正的格律,千锤百炼、概括简洁的文字都是一般散文所望尘莫及的。而爱伦.坡的这首诗,通过它的音步、韵律和韵脚。表现了完美的声((harmony)与节奏(rhythm),朗诵起来,抑扬顿挫,铿锵悦耳,如一首节奏明快的乐曲,使人产生出无限美感。
