Now were always hearing about road accident, and when were in a car we try to drive carefully, but how many of us take the same degree of care in our homes? Any large hospital will tell you the number of the accidents that happen in the home is almost the same as those on the road.

One of the commonest and most dangerous causes of home accidents is wrong and careless use of electrical equipment. People will continue to use a loose plug or pull out a plug without first turning off the power. In spite of warnings, one will carry an electric heater into the bathroom when he is going to have a bath. Sometimes one forgets to cut off the power before mending a lamp or something else. All this will cause accidents. So the rule about anything that work by electricity is:Switch off before you touch anything and dont pretend you know when you actually dont.

If youve got children in the house, its always best to keep medicines of any kind out of their reach. Otherwise, they may be taken for candies or a new kind of drink. When there are older people living with you, you have to take particular care in a number of ways in order to make them safe and happy.

Fire, of course, is always a risk. So, remember not to dry clothes in front of fires, or leave stoves in the middle of rooms where they can easily be knocked over. And dont forget to keep the children away from fire. Smoking, too, may cause fire. So youd better give it up. A winter wonderland on the outskirts (市郊) of Quebec City has become one of Canadas hottest attractions and most sought out accommodations. Guests stay close for warmth in sleeping bags on beds of ice, hats pulled over their ears to prevent frostbite, while sipping (tasting and drinking) cocktails (鸡尾酒) in glasses also made of ice.

A cool place to host a memorable wedding or for a romantic getaway, the Quebec Ice Hotel has attracted 600,000 curious tourists, including 30,000 who stayed overnight, since opening seasonally 11 years ago. Like Victoria and Jeremy Martin, dozens of couples will exchange vows (誓约) this winter in a temporary church next to the hotel, sculpted entirely from blocks of ice with seats covered in furs.

Average temperatures fall below minus 20 degrees C (minus four F) in winter, but inside the hotels 36 rooms it is relatively cozy. Thick walls of packed snow and ice act as an insulator, trapping body heat inside. Each room is uniquely decorated, using designs created by Quebec architecture students. Two hotel bars also sell special cocktails in ice glasses.

Firsttime guests of the hotel, however, are recommended to stay only one night as sleeping in subzero temperatures is not very refreshing. This year for the first time the ice hotel has teamed up with bricks and concrete Quebec City hotel to offer packages for one night accommodations at each. Prices for one night only at the ice hotel start at 200 US dollars per person.

The 3,000squaremetre (32,300squarefeet) buildings take six weeks starting in December to build, using 15,000 tons of snow and 500 tons of ice, at a cost of some 750,000 US dollars. Waste to Energy—JUST BURN IT!

WHY BURN WASTE?

Wastetoenergy plants generate (产生) enough electricity to supply 2.4 million households in the US. But, providing electricity is not the major advantage of wastetoenergy plants. In fact, it costs more to generate electricity at a wastetoenergy plant than it does at a coal, nuclear, or hydropower plant.

The major advantage of burning waste is that it considerably reduces the amount of trash going to landfills. The average American produces more than 1,600 pounds of waste a year. If all this waste were landfilled (在垃圾填埋地上处理), it would take more than two cubic yards of landfill space. Thats the volume of a box three feet long, three feet wide, and six feet high. If that waste were burned, the ashes would fit into a box three feet long, three feet wide, but only nine inches high!

Some communities in the Northeast may be running out of land for new landfills. And, since most people dont want landfills in their backyards, it has become more difficult to obtain permits to build new landfills. Taking the country as a whole, the United States has plenty of open space, of course, but it is expensive to transport garbage a long distance to put it into a landfill.

TO BURN OR NOT TO BURN?

Some people are concerned that burning garbage may harm the environment. Like coal plants, wastetoenergy plants produce air pollution when the fuel is burned to produce steam or electricity. Burning garbage releases the chemicals and substances found in the waste. Some chemicals can be a threat to people, the environment, or both, if they are not properly controlled.

Some critics of wastetoenergy plants are afraid that burning waste will hamper (妨碍,阻碍) recycling programs. If everyone sends their trash to a wastetoenergy plant, they say, there will be little motive to recycle. Several states have considered or are considering banning wastetoenergy plants unless recycling programs are in place. Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York City have delayed new wastetoenergy plants, hoping to increase the level of recycling first.

So, whats the real story? Can recycling and burning waste coexist? At first glance, recycling and wastetoenergy seem to be at odds (不一致), but they can actually complement (弥补) each other. Thats because it makes good sense to recycle some materials, and better sense to burn others.

Lets look at aluminum, for example. Aluminum mineral is so expensive to mine that recycling aluminum more than pays for itself. Burning it produces no energy. So clearly, aluminum is valuable to recycle and not useful to burn.

Paper, on the other hand, can either be burned or recycled—it all depends on the price the used paper will bring.

Plastics are another matter. Because plastics are made from petroleum and natural gas, they are excellent sources of energy for wastetoenergy plants. This is especially true since plastics are not as easy to recycle as steel, aluminum, or paper. Plastics almost always have to be hand sorted and making a product from recycled plastics may cost more than making it from new materials.

To burn or not to burn is not really the question. We should use both recycling and wastetoenergy as alternatives to landfilling.

Is It The Only Way Out To Go To College?

Recently we carried out a survey in our school about whether it is the only way out for senior students to go to college. And different students have different opinions.

The majority of students consider it very necessary to go to college. They think it can widen their knowledge and improve their qualities. Only in this way can they find better jobs after graduation. Very few students, that is about ten percent of the students, think it no use going university, because the tuition is too high for their family to afford. Whats more, its rather hard for college graduates to get satisfactory jobs. Thirty percent of the students, however, believe “All roads lead to Rome.” Therefore, it doesnt make any difference whether they go to college or not.

As far as I am concerned, we can receive a better education at college so that we can serve our motherland. (150 words)
