Once upon a time there was a writer who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.

One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance here. So he began to walk faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn't dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean.

As he got much closer he called out, "Good morning! What are you doing?"

The young man paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish into the ocean."

"I guess I should have asked why you are throwing starfish in the ocean?" the man said.

"The sun is up, and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'll die. " the young man answered.

"But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach, and starfish all along it. You can't possibly make a difference!"

The young man listened politely, then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said, "It made a difference for that one."

There is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference. And if we can become aware of that gift, we gain through the strength of our visions the power to shape the future. We must each find :our starfish. And if we throw our stars wisely and well, the world will be blessed.

从前，有一位作家，他常常在海边写作。在写作前，他总喜欢在沙滩上散散步。

一天，他正在海边散步。跟望沙滩时，他发现有个人像是在沙滩上跳舞。他暗自发笑，心想不知是谁在那里跳舞，于是加快脚步赶上去。

走近时他才看清楚，原来是个年轻人。他没有跳舞，而是在弯腰拣起什么东西，然后轻轻地扔进大海。

走得更近时，他大声地问道：“你好！你在忙什么？”

年轻人停下来，抬头说：“把海星扔进大海。”

作家说：“我想我刚才应该问你为什么要把海星扔进大海？”

“太阳出来了，海潮也退了，如果我不把它们送回大海，它们肯定会死的。”年轻人回答说。

“但是，年轻人，你难道不知道这里的海岸有数百英里长，海星数不胜数，你不可能改变所有海星的命运啊!”

年轻人认真地听完他的话，蹲下身拾起一个海星扔进了海里，然后说道：“至少这只海星的命运改变了。”

我们每个人都与众不同，而且都被赋予了特殊的能力。如果我们能够意识到这种能力，我们就能更好地运用它来规划未来。努力寻找我们生命中的海星吧，如果扔得准确，世界也会因此而受益。
