With a list of many firsts to her credit―first female VJ, first style guru on TV, first lady of dance and the first Indian celebrity to be on the cover of Cosmo (an exhaustive list, no doubt), malaika believes she wouldn’t be the woman she is today if it weren’t for the roles she’s played over the years. Best known for her chart-topping videos that have become anthems for the masses and a strong sense of fashion, Malaika dropped from the media radar for a while after the success of cult flick, Dabangg. But not one to take a break for long, she’s back with a kitty full of projects that’ll make you dizzy. Apart from filming Anarkali Chali Disco for Housefull 2 with Farah Khan, she is also a jury member on a popular dance show, and is planning to start her own production company and maybe even a restaurant, in the near future. We manage to track her down for this interview, while she’s picking up her son, Arhaan from school. Our conversation is punctuated with 4th grade Biology questions about the epidermal layer of skin, fitting perhaps, as the multi-tasking mommy shares her secrets to great skin and haircare with us; and we realise there’s a whole other side to Malaika, masked by the celebrity status, that we’re dying to discover...

On keeping the spark alive with hubby, Arbaaz:

“You know, we’ve been together for 18 years now. As a rule, all relationships go through their ups and downs. It’s really about how much you want it. You can use all the clichés about needing space etc., but if you want something, you have to consciously work towards it. Everyone says romance goes flying out the window when you’ve been together for an X amount of time. I think it’s all up to you. The thing I find most attractive about Arbaaz is that he’s a pillar of strength; and not just for me, but for everyone in his life. He’s secure and has a strong personality that I absolutely adore.”

On the most romantic thing she’s ever done:

“We love to travel, and many birthdays and anniversaries have been spent abroad. What truly surprised Arbaaz was when we renewed our vows for our 10th anniversary. He thought it was just a few of us heading to Goa. That has to be the biggest surprise I’ve pulled off, and it was spectacular because he really had no idea.”
