fukuhara Ai, featured with a lovely baby face, always catches the eyes of media in or out of the arena. She is avoidably destined to connect with China ever since born and once served in the Super League Matches of Chinese Table Tennis. More than once, she claimed, “I am half chinese.”

A Chinese saying quotes “Fate leads people from thousands of miles to meet”. The Beijing Olympic Games indeed became a bridge for a great many foreign athletes to know China and even fall in love with it. Actually, some of them since their childhood have already got something connected to China, like Fukuhara Ai, the Japanese Table Tennis Player with nickname called “Porcelain Doll”. Fukuhara was coached in China when very young, and more than once, she claimed, “I am half Chinese”.

“Mosquitoes especially like children”

After dinner, Fukuhara happily came to chitchat with us and together with her Father Arinobu and her 22-year-old Chinese Coach, Tang Yuanyuan. Fatty figure, short hair, rouge cheek, curving eyelashes and wearing short-sleeved sweater and shorts, Fukuhara looks simply like a lovely Japanese cartoon figure. After seated, she immediately showed something unstill, flapping on her thigh or scratching on her arm. “Mosquito!” she complained while bending her legs on the chair with a glimpse on us, “Mosquitoes especially like children.”

“I came to Shanghai for my first trip to China”

Fukuhara has a 10-year older brother who likes table tennis as well. When very young, she was brought by parents to accompany her brother to practice. Sometimes when she fell asleep in her cradle, her parents then put it under the table tennis table. When 3 years and 9 months old, Fukuhara told her father for the first time that she wanted to learn table tennis.

Fukuhara sat up straight the moment she heard Deng’s name, “Deng Yaping is one of my most respected and admired table tennis players. When I was very young, she advised me on how to play table tennis.”

“She hugged me then.” seriously said Fukuhara after a pause. “People say that when Deng Yaping hugged me, just like two children hugging together.”

At our smiles, she explained seriously, “what I mean is probably we cannot grow bigger.” Her idols are the best players in China now: Wang Nan and Zhang Yining. “Anyway all the Chinese players are my examples to learn from”. She said with a smile.

Fukuhara speaks very good Chinese which is credited to that all her coaches are Chinese. What is more interesting is that she has also acquired the different accents from them as they are from different parts of China. Now, but only for now, she speaks mandarin in northeast China accent, as her coach Tang Yuanyuan is from Liaoning. “Can you speak Shanghai dialect?” We couldn’t help asking. “Nong Hao”(Hello) ,“A la yi dao qiu fan”(Let’s take a bite together.). Finally she told us that in her secondary school two of her classmates are Shanghainese. “Anything else?” “Nong ge nin fi ei wu na neng ga du (Why you have so much nonsense)?” said Fukuhara with a smile on her face, which surprised us very much as her pronunciation and the tone (and even the occasion) were prefect and fit. We couldn’t help admiring her a lot!

“In Japan I want Chinese dishes, and here I miss Japanese cuisine.”

What do you like most about China? Turning her eyeballs, Fukuhara’s answer were Chinese dishes such as Xiaolongbao (Small Steamed Puff) and spring rolls in Shanghai, shrimps dumplings in Canton, and broccoli, celery, and sliced eels. She did not know how to say broccoli in Chinese, so she drew us a picture for explanation. “When in Japan for a long time, I want to try Chinese dishes, and when in China for a long time, I want Japanese food”. She said her mother was good at cooking Chinese dishes now because of her taste. “Chinese dishes are very delicious”.

Fukuhara’s favorite animals are panda and “fatty, long-tailed ...” she cannot express herself and drew again. At last, we realized that what she meant was raccoon. “And I also like dogs, silent ones” she added and kept asking us to note down this answer. We couldn’t help wondering whether she also understood the Chinese saying “Good dogs do not bark.”?

From 4 years old onwards, Fukuhara visited China at least once a year. So far, she has been to a dozen of cities in China. In her father’s word, “Our Fukuhara is half Japanese and half Chinese”. Mentioning this “Half”, Fukuhara became serious again. “Do you mean vertical halves or horizontal halves?” she asked while making signs on her body. “I don’t agree with horizontal halves. “ In the street in Japan I can only see other people’s feet.”

Fukuhara has been the focus of the Japanese media since she was 4 years old. She participated in TV programs, shot advertisements and issued her own music records, and even made her fans to call her as Shirley Temple in Japanese sport field. Her name is also adopted in the Japanese Sports Terminology Dictionary, 2000 Edition. The entry of Fukuhara is explained as “nicknamed Talented Table Tennis Girl, active advertisement star, TV show guest and singer, and of course, the future and hope of Japanese table tennis”.

Fukuhara is now ranking the 25th in the world. She said that, besides China players, some other Chinese players serving other countries are also very skilled. However, she is confident as to beat all the players from the countries other than China, “Because I am also coached by China.”

Since being a half Chinese player, Fukuhara hopes the Chinese audience during the games can also cheer up for her in addition to the China players.
