初中教材中出现过的终止性动词有join, begin, marry, borrow, buy, arrive, leave, stop, come, end, go, return, finish, take, place等。学生使用这些动词时,容易在以下六个方面出错。

1. 终止性动词不能和“for + 一段时间”连用。若汉语句子中有终止性动词,又有表示一段时间的状语,就不可机械、生硬地将其译成英语。而应该用下面三种方式对英语句子加以改造: (1) 根据意义将终止性动词改为相应的延续性动词; (2) 将“for + 一段时间”改为“... ago”的形式; (3) 改用“It’s ... since”或“... have passed since”句式。例如:

我离开北京十年了。

【误】 I have left Beijing for ten years.

【正】 I have been away from Beijing for ten years.

【正】 I left Beijing ten years ago.

【正】 It is ten years since I left Beijing.

【正】 Ten years has passed since I left Beijing.

2. 终止性动词不能和“since(自从……以来)”引导的时间状语子连用。例如:

他1990年就入党了。

【误】 He has joined the Party since 1990.

【正】 He has been in the Party since 1990.

3. 终止性动词不能与在“from + 时间名词 + to/till + 时间名词”或或“between + 时间名词 + and + 时间名词”连用。例如:

从星期三至星期五举行运动会。

【误】 The sports meeting took place from Wednesday to Friday.

【正】 The sports meeting was held from Wednesday to Friday.

4. 终止性动词不能与“How long”和“How many days/weeks/months/years”同用在特殊疑问句中。例如:

这本书我可以借多久?

【误】 How many days may I borrow the book?

【正】 How many days may I keep the book?

5. 终止性动词不能用在以“until/till”作时间状语的肯定句中,但可以用在否定句中。例如:

昨晚直到 12 点他才回家。

【误】 He went home until 12 o’clock last night.

【正】 He didn’t go home until 12 o’clock last night.

6. while引导的时间状语从句不能用在谓语动词为终止性动词的主从复合句中。例如:

当他进来时,我们正在看电视。

【误】 While he came in, we were watching TV.

【正】 When he came in, we were watching TV.
