一、用作连词

1. but用作并列连词，意为“但是”“然而”“尽管如此”等，可用来连接两个并列成分或两个并列分句，表示转折意义。如：

Life is limited，but there is no limit to learning. 生命有限，学海无涯。

在口语中，but 常被置于“Excuse me”或“I’m sorry”之后，用来提出请求或引出可能引起对方不快的话。在礼貌地拒绝别人的邀请时，常先说“I’d be happy to/I’d like to/I’d love to”，再由but引出理由。如：

Excuse me，but are you Mr. Smith？对不起，您是史密斯先生吗？

2. but 在某些固定结构中可用作从属连词，放在否定词或疑问词之后，意义上相当于that...not。如：

He never comes but he brings some presents for my children. 他每次来都给我的孩子带些礼物。

二、but 用作介词时，相当于apart from/except/other than， 意为“除……之外”，其后可跟名词、代词、形容词、数词或动词不定式。如：

You can come any day but Friday. 除了星期五，你哪天来都行。

注意：but 后接动词不定式时，如果谓语动词为实意动词do的某种形式，则but后的动词不定式不带to。

三、but 用作副词，意思是“仅仅”“只是”，相当于only/no more than/only just， 常用于正式场合。如：

We can but try. 我们只能试试。

I have seen him but once. 我只见过他一次。

四、由but 构成的常用短语。如：

1. not ... but ... 不是……而是……。如：

He is not a scientist，but a musician. 他不是一位科学家，而是一位音乐家。

2. have no choice but to do 别无选择；不得不做。如：

At that time，we had no choice but to wait for help. 当时，我们别无选择，只好等别人来帮忙。

3. but for 要不是……。如：

But for your timely help，the boy would have lost his life. 要不是你的及时帮助，那个男孩早就没命了。

4.nothing but 完完全全。如：

You are nothing but a fool if you do such a thing. 如果你这样干，你就是个十足的大傻瓜。

5. cannot /couldn’t help but do不得不；禁不住。如：

You can’t help but respect him. 人们不由得对他满怀敬意。

6. cannot /couldn’t choose but 不得不；必须。如：

We could not choose but obey him. 我们只能服从他。
