Yes, I had reached the age of 25. Still, I doubted this letter from my past would make it to me, all these years later. It was a simple creative writing assignment[作业] from when I was 15.

The teacher collected our letters and promised to mail them ten years later. But, so much time had passed, would he keep his word[守信]? Would he even remember?

Thinking back on the letter, I tried to remember writing it. I vaguely[含糊地] recalled giving my future self some advice.

In my recollection[回忆], my 15-year-old self wanted to make sure I would continue to write and figure skate[花样滑冰], and she probably assumed I’d be married and have a baby by now.

When you’re 15 years old, 25 seems like a grown-up age, but I wasn’t feeling as grown up as I believed my younger self expected me to be.

Then, on a family vacation in San Diego, my parents brought me the mail from home. In scrawled[潦草地写] ink, there was a letter addressed to myself. I knew it was the one! I laughed delightedly and could not believe what was in my hands. I opened it eagerly and was astounded by the results.

The letter began in true 15-year-old fashion: “How much do you bet that this letter will never get to you?”

It continued to greet me casually as if we were having an IM[即时传讯] chat.

Here are two key bits from the essence[本质] of the letter, which I found important and beautiful:

My 15-year-old self was so stressed!

As an almost junior[(美国)高三] in high school, facing the SAT注 and AP courses, as well as college applications[申请]―and of course, the peer[同辈] pressure―I was apparently[显然地] not quite happy.

Thus, much of my letter to myself was filled with advice and hopes that I wouldn’t stress and worry so much in the future, and that I wouldn’t forget to enjoy my life! It was so wise and sweet.

Contrary to[与……相反] my belief, my 15-year-old self did not have any demands[要求] of me, or false expectations or goals that I might have failed to meet.

Instead, she wrote “…So I guess I’ll stand by whatever you do, because even if you are not who I imagine now, I’ll support you, because maybe who I’m imagining is someone else, and you are―well you’re not someone else, you’re me.”

I was blown away, and tears welled up[涌出] in my eyes at this self-acceptance through time. I immediately wrote a heart-felt thankyou letter to my high school teacher and sent it in the mail.

Then, I wrote a thoughtful letter to my 35-year-old self and tucked it away for the next ten years.

In this new letter, I paid the selfacceptance forward even further. I am a big goal-setter, and like many I know, I put a lot of pressure on myself to be the best and biggest version of myself that I can be.

However, I now knew that what I would have accomplished[实现] and what I would have done in ten years time would pale[使失色] in comparison to[与……比较] how I’d feel and who I’d be.

For me, the biggest lesson in receiving the letter was the idea of“allowing”―allowing myself to be whoever I am, allowing myself to relinquish[放弃] my plans for who I“should become,” allowing myself to simply “show up.”

In what ways can you create a time capsule[时代文化密藏器] for yourself?

I recommend[推荐] experimenting with envisioning[想象] your future life, accepting and forgiving your past selves, and writing to yourself at a specific[明确的] age in the future (five or ten years, for example).

As you write, consider these questions:

What hopes do you hold for yourself in the future?

What fears and obstacles[障碍] do you currently[当前] face that you wish to overcome?

What internal resources do you inherently[固有地] possess[拥有] that will help you, now and always?

What goals do you have that you aspire[追求] to? Tip: Commit[承诺] to the vision, but be flexible[灵活的] to the form.

What is the ultimate[根本的] reason why these goals matter to you? (For example: I want to be a public speaker. Why? Because I want to share my knowledge openly!)

How would you react if you met your future self? How would you interact? Create a sample dialogue―see where it goes!

And finally: What are the ways that you can seek to love your future self no matter how much the future varies from what you expect it would be?

Time travel is possible, and we can indeed learn a lot by removing ourselves from the calender’s grasp[抓住], by seeing ourselves as an ever-changing being. Happy travels!

这种穿越时空的自我接纳令我感慨良多,热泪盈眶。我立刻给我的高中老师写了一封发自肺腑的感谢信,寄了出去。

接着,我又给35岁的自己写了一封经过深思熟虑的信,然后把它收好,留到十年后再看。

在这封新的信里,我把自我接纳又向前推进了一步。我是一个喜欢制定目标的人,就像我认识的很多人一样,我给自己很大压力,要求竭尽全力,做最好的自己。

然而现在我知道了,我在十年里所做的事,与我的感受和我是什么样的人比起来,终将显得黯淡苍白。

收到这封信,给我的最大教益就是“允许”――允许自己成为任何人,允许自己放弃预先制定的“我应该成为怎样的人”的计划,允许自己“出现”即可。

我建议可以设想一下自己未来的生活,接纳和原谅过去的自己,给未来某个具体年龄(例如五年或十年)的自己写信。

你天生拥有哪些内在的天赋,不仅现在,而且永远都能够帮助你?

俚语blow somebody away有多种意思:
