At 9:00 a.m.,I was scheduled to talk at a local high school to students in a program designed for pregnant(怀孕的) teens and troubled kids in school. The school is highly secured because most of the kids are troublemakers who become involved with the law.I found it very difficult to address this multi-cultural(多元文化) group and talk about things that could encourage them for the future. I wasn’t making any progress until I started talking about what I do so well, helping people with money.

I took out a stack(堆) of $2 bills and started giving them out.The kids began to wake up because it was free money. The only thing I asked them after they took the money was not to spend it on themselves.I told them that they each had children that are unborn and,may be,if there is anything in this world that could help them forward,it is the fact that someone cares enough to do this.

Some of them asked for my signature.I think I honestly touched some of them.I started exchanging the dollar bills for a copy of the book I had written. Finally I closed with telling them no matter what happens, someone out there really cares about them and is pulling for their success.

This is not the end of the story. When I left the classroom,I told them to call me if they ever had problems.I couldn’t promise that I could help, but I was willing to listen and to do anything in the world.

Three days later I received a letter from a girl who heard my talk,in which she wrote: The day before your talk,I had decided to take mine and my unborn child’s life because I really didn’t think anyone cared. When you told the story,it brought tears to my eyes―there are people like you that care about people like me.Thanks for caring.

Until the doctor told me that I might go blind, the future spread before me in all directions. My paintings had been shown in New York galleries(艺术馆). I enjoyed the hours in my studio. But now everything was shadowed with fear.

One day, after I showed photos of my paintings to Ron, who was an eye doctor and sculptor (雕塑家), he asked me to go to his school and show slides of my work to his students with developmental disorders.

The next day, when I arrived at the school, I found one student was in the art room already waiting, a young man in a wheelchair. His head was held up by wires. His fingers were bent backward. When I came in, his eyes met mine. A burst of voltage(电压) passed from him to me.

Two other students arrived, one of them wheeled in by Ron, who had invited me. This boy’s arms were lashed (猛击) to his wheelchair.

“Tim is a professional artist,” Ron told the group, “and is here to share his ideas.” Ideas? Getting free of the limitations of the physical world―that was the point of my paintings. Was I supposed to share this with people in the wheelchairs? Nervously I showed slides of my paintings. You make art to say something you can’t say with words, I explained. These paintings might be about being held down, and getting free.

After I showed the last slide, Ron said, “Maybe Tim will come and visit again. What do you say?” he asked me. I looked at the man with the wired head. When our eyes met, he nodded with a slight movement of his head.

The next few nights, I lay awake thinking about the million things these people could not do: climb a tree, hold a spoon, or turn the pages of a book. Yet there was that light in their eyes. What would they tell us if they had the power?

Then I called the school and reached the director of the arts program. “I was there a week ago, showing slides of my paintings in Ron’s class. I was wondering if I could come back.” “To help with the class?” she asked.

“No,” I said. “To start a new one.”

While the artificial(人造的) hand is considerably less useful than the natural one, there may be some jobs that it can do more efficiently. From time to time we have to do rather difficult jobs and feel that one of our fingers is getting in the way. It is possible that on these occasions a specially designed artificial hand would be more efficient.

Scientists in the United States are studying ways of increasing the power of the human hand, or rather of its muscles. Known as a “man-amplifier”(人体增强器), a machine under development at Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory, consists of a framework or suit which the operator wears. Every movement he makes is repeated by the steel framework he is wearing, but the power which moves the parts of the frame comes from hydraulic(液压的) motors.

If the operator bends down to pick something up, the work is done not by his own weak muscles but by the hydraulic motors which make it possible for him to lift 450 kilograms in each hand.

Another machine called a “HandiMan” has two arms and hands which repeat every movement of the operator’s arms and hands, but with much more strength. The arms and hands on this machine also feed back to the operator information about the work they are doing and the difficulties they meet, so that he can adjust(调节) his control accordingly.

In these devices the operator controls the movements directly: they are an extension of his own movements. But just as the operations of a distant unmanned spaceship circling the moon can be controlled by radio signals, so also such devices, properly designed, could be radio-controlled. An astronaut exploring an unknown planet could send out a robot which could do the job for him and send back information. Will the day ever come when the machine, more powerful than man and controlled by a computer brain, takes over from its human inventor?

57. The passage is mainly about ________.

C. the wide use of robots in many fields

D. the operation of the artificial hand in space exploration

58. According to the passage, the artificial hand is ________.

A. widely used for it has proved better than the natural hand

B. slower in doing some rather difficult jobs

C. operated by a strong man or otherwise by a computer

D. being tried and tested to help people in some ways

59. How many times would it take an operator wearing a “man-amplifier” to carry 2,500 kilograms?

A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.

60. The advantage of a “HandiMan” over a “man-amplifier” mentioned in the passage is ________.

A. the operator knows how the work is going on

B. it can work with more strength and pick up more weight

C. the machine is more powerful and easier to operate
