The opening ceremony of Zhang Kangkang Literature Museum & Writing Studio, held at the Gongyuan Campus of Hangzhou High School in the golden season of 2016, drew participation of more than 100 special guests who enjoyed the aspiring greeting lecture from the school principal Shang Kezhi. Student members of the Lu Xun Literature Club of the school had a good time taking part in the first workshop of the writing studio held on the afternoon of the opening day and hosted by Zhang Kangkang, Zhao Lihong and Qiu Huadong.

The museum is a high-tech multi-media summary of the writer’s “road to fame” and her representative works. The exhibits also include a collection of manuscripts and a group of her works proud to bear the signature of more than 200 renowned literary figures at home and abroad.

About the school

Founded in 1899, Hangzhou High School draws resources from and inherits the fine tradition of its predecessor Yangzheng Academy. It was the first public high school in Zhejiang Province, enjoying an unfailing reputation in China throughout its hundred-year-long history. The school joined the College Board (a New York-based American nonprofit organization formed in 1899 that runs a membership association of institutions and develops/administers standardized tests and curricula used by KC12 and post-secondary education institutions to promote college-readiness and as part of the college admissions process) in 2014 and launched its International Department in the same year.

Generations of students have graduated from the school powered and inspired by the school motto “Science, human-oriented, truth and innovation” for the rest of their life no matter what they chose to specialize in.

About Zhang Kangkang

Born in Hangzhou in 1950, Zhang Kangkang spent eight years in China’s Great Northern Wildness toiling in the countryside after graduation from junior high school in Hangzhou. The life-altering change came in 1977 when she became a student majoring in screenwriting at an art school in Heilongjiang Province. Her first novel was published only two years later. She settled down in Beijing in the mid-1980s, and has since been a prolific writer and an activist of copyright protection, with her works having been translated into many languages.

Her strong sense of mission and dauntless pursuit of goals is a key contributor to her accomplishments as a writer.

“I have been inspired by Lu Xun since I was 16, although in my younger years what the literary giant said was a little beyond my comprehension. I feel like the man’s critical spirit has been burned into my blood and forged my spirituality in the mellowing years of my life, as manifested by all the humanitarian thoughts I strive to put in my writing. It is no exaggeration to say that it is the school together with its shiny alumni that sew the seeds of my writing style,” Zhang Kangkang wrote in an article dedicated to the 110th anniversary of the birth of Hangzhou High School.

The museum is a record of Zhang’s metamorphosis from a juvenile literature star into a mature writer. It is the hall of fame of Hangzhou High School where the fertile literary soil has cultivated generations of outstanding graduates who are now the proud representatives of the industry they represent. Many of such achievers have come back, just like what Zhang Kangkang does, to reward the school in a meaningful way. Over the past decades, the school was visited by such literary giants as Lu Xun, Li Shutong and Pan Tianshou, and witnessed the country’s most famous “romanticists” C Xu Zhimo, Yu Dafu, Zhu Ziqing, etc. realizing their literary dreams. From Jin Yong and Xu Qinwen to Zhang Kangkang, generations of “hanggao” (Hangzhou High School) alumni added a fluorescent touch to the poetic aura of Hangzhou.

The newly unveiled museum will also serve as one of the incubators cultivating the writing talents of youngsters in Hangzhou, and as a new platform for the cultural communication between Zhejiang and the outside world.
