In 2010, the Olympic Council of Asia(OCA) signed a contract with nanjing to host the second asian youth games (AYG) in 2013. Now preparations for next year’s Asian Youth Games are well under way and much has been achieved.

Participation by the young people is an outstanding feature in the whole process. Various kinds of activities and events have been held to promote the concept of “For the Young and By the Young”.

The activities include a walk on the city wall, an anniversary celebration, a one?year countdown celebration and so on. These activities have created great enthusiasm among the local residents, especially the young people in schools and universities.

In Nanjing, there is a very positive view of voluntary work. Nanjing has hundreds of primary and middle schools and about 50 universities and colleges. Therefore there is a large base for volunteer recruitment. The organizer plans to recruit between 10,000 and 15,000 volunteers, mainly from colleges, universities and middle schools in Nanjing. The volunteers will do every aspect of voluntary work, including event organization, cultural education, medical services, traffic assistance, security, media, interpretation and cheering squads.

The AYG is an international multi?sport event. It is held every four years to complement the current Asian Games. The first AYG was hosted by Singapore. By hosting the second Asian Youth Games, the organizing committee hopes to accumulate experience for the International Olympic Committee’s second Youth Olympic Games in 2014, which will also be held in Nanjing.

The emblem for the 2013 AYG is in the likeness of the Chinese character “Ning”(shortened name for “Nanjing”) in the sunshine, which includes such elements as a distant mountain, running water, ancient city walls and green tree leaves.

The mascot for the 2013 AYG, called Yuan Yuan, is based on the image of the earliest higher primate found in Jiangsu. It also combines the elements of a bright red sun in the symbol of Olympic Council of Asia and Yuhua pebbles representing Nanjing.
