英语中的but是一个常用词，使用频率比较高。大部分人对它表示转折的含义比较熟悉，但它的用法很广泛，现总结如下：

一、用作连词

1 并列连词，表示：但是，可是。这是我们日常最常用的含义。如：

I would like to go, but I can not 我想去，[ZZ2]但是不能去。

he coat was thin but warm 外衣虽薄[ZZ1]但很温暖。

2 从属连词，表示：而不，若不，如果不 （意思同unless或if[WW(]…[WW)]not）。如：

Nothing will do but I must leave [ZZ2]除非我离开，没有别的办法。

I shall go hard but I will better the instruction [ZZ2]如果我[ZZ（]不[ZZ）]改进教育方法，那就难办了。

3（用于否定词或疑问词之后，表示否定）意思是：不致；not such(或so)[WW(]…[WW)]but that意为“尽管……还是”。 如：

No task is so difficult but(that) we can finish it [ZZ2]不管任务怎样困难，我们都能完成。

4 表示异议、惊奇、吃惊或用以加强某词的语气。如：

―Im getting married 我快要结婚了。

―But thats wonderful! [ZZ1]啊，那太好了！

Nothing, but nothing will make me change my mind 没有任何事情，绝对没有任何事情可以使我改变主意。

二、用作介词

1 用于否定词nobody, none, nowhere等和疑问词who, where等之后以及all, everyone, anyone等之后；意思是“除……之外；此外；不同于”。如：

he problem is anything but easy 这个问题可绝不容易。

Everyone is there but him 除了他之外，所有人都在。

2（同first, next, last等词连用）意为“除了”。 如：

last but first (two , three) 倒数第二（第三 ，第四）

I live in the last house but two(=the third house from the end) in this street 我住在这条街上倒数第三家。

3 意为“除……之外”，此时but前若有实意动词do的任何形式，but后的不定式需省去to。如：

Last night I did nothing but watch V昨晚我除了看电视外，什么事都没干。

比较：he doctor told him nothing but to stop smoking医生除了告诉他戒烟外什么都没说。

三、用作代词

意义相当于who[WW(]…[WW)]not, that[WW(]…[WW)]not。如：

here is not one of us but wishes (=not one of us who does not wish)to help you 我们人人都想去帮你。

here are few of us but(=few of us who do not)admire your determination 我们中间很少人不钦佩你的决心。
