Outside, the clouds are 1)closing in on me as the plane 2)soars higher and higher. I am holding my breath, fearful of what is about to happen but it is too late to turn back.

As I make the jump, my heart 3)pounds as though it is trying to reach through my chest to escape. At first, I feel so heavy then weightlessness. I am 4)plummeting

toward earth, my body falling through the clouds.

The wind pushes my cheeks back, exposing my teeth to the cold air even though it is a hot summer day. My 5)goggles are frosting over, and below me I see snow on the highest peaks of mountains. On the ground, it is 86, but up here it is so much colder.

I scream, but no sounds are heard except the pounding of the wind in my ears. Suddenly I am lifted, with great force, toward the heavens. For a brief

moment, I think this is what it must feel like to be a bird

completely free.

My heart slows as I 6)drift downward. I am no longer

plummeting to my death, but am floating with the 7)breeze. I can breathe now the ground doesn’t look as scary as it did just seconds ago. I have the chance to sit back and enjoy the ride, to view a part of the world with new 8)perspective.

I look above at the blue-and-yellow 9)striped 10)parachute, wondering what it must look like from the ground. When I look beyond, I can see through the clouds. When I was a child, I used to think that clouds were so heavy you could jump on them. Now I smile at the lost 11)innocence. I imagine this is what the view is like from heaven.

“Am I really still alive?” I wonder.

Thousands of feet below, the Austrian Alps provide a wonderful view. I am suddenly aware of the instructor 12)strapped to my back and turn around, a huge smile on my face.

“How do you enjoy your first skydive?” he asks me, but I can’t speak my mouth is dry from the force of the wind, and I have no words. My smile tells him I am 13)ecstatic.

The 14)glide to the ground seems to last forever. I am drifting in every direction, enjoying the beauty of the land below me. From the pale greens and dark browns of the farm crops to the contrasting gray of the mountains, touched with white snow on their tips, the Austrian Alps set an amazing scene for the adventure.

I had arrived in St. Johann, in Tirol, the 15)previous

day in June. Centrally located between Munich,

Salzburg and Innsbruck, St. Johann is a beautiful

village at the base of the famous Kitzbüheler Horn.

Famous for its mountain trails and ski 16)runs, the village has just over 8,000 residents.

It was one of the last stops on our 21-day “Summer Fun and Sailing” trip, and all 50 of us, mostly Australians, were there for a great time. I would also be spending my birthday there, and wanted to make it a memorable one.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with clear blue skies contrasting against 17)lush green 18)meadows,

and the fresh smell of the forests. The friendly

locals waved to us as we passed by them on our way through the town.

That night, we headed to Bunny’s Pub, which opened in 1986, and has been operating under an Australian theme since 1996. It was a great taste of home with its paintings, sports 19)memorabilia and, most of all, my favorite Australian beer, Victoria Bitter.

The next morning, I woke to the sound of tractors on their way into town, as St. Johann’s locals 20)celebrated the Tirol 21)Old-timer Traktortreffen (Old-timer Tractor Gathering).

It is the 22)finale of the weeklong Tirolean Mountain

Spring Festival, which welcomes the shift from spring into summer. The event begins at 8 a.m. with the owners of more than 100 23)vintage tractors meeting in the center of town before 24)parading through the streets.

They smiled and waved to the crowds as they

paraded down the street in their tractors. Then theyhead to the Pointenhof Inn, where they listened to

music, drank beer and enjoyed the sunshine.

All year round, there are a number of outdoors

activities in St. Johann. In summer, adventure-seekers can enjoy canyoneering注1, whitewater rafting注2, 25)paragliding, skydiving, climbing or hiking.

Whether it is because the sun was shining or simply because everyone is having so much fun, the beauty of Tirol is something special especially from 12,000 feet!

Experience Tirol Culture

Austrians love FUN. It is the kind of fun that translates into every language.

Jokes often involve men liking women (sometimes because they like women a bit too much)...Practical, knock-about[喧闹的] type fun is also order of the day[流行的事物].

In Austria, you cannot be down in the mouth[垂头丧气] for very long. People are very kind and friendly. When you visit, you feel like a part of the village pretty quickly.

Do try and learn even a couple of phrases in German. The locals will appreciate your trying, even if you

mangle[撕裂,此处比喻破坏] the language. Of course, they all speak brilliant English but that is not the point. Trying to use a bit of German is good manners, in someone else’s country. You hardly ever get laughed at, however bad your accent is.

All the locals like BIER (“beer” in German) or wine, but be careful not to indulge[放纵] too heavily. Public drunkenness is very frowned upon[反对].

Mountain walking is a must. If you can’t manage a big walk, don’t worry, just use the cable cars or chair

You will meet all sorts of people in the mountains often 80-year-olds who are better walkers than the unfit tourists!

Shopping in Tirol

Shopping in Tirol can be a very fun experience, and many tourists spend countless hours browsing

and buying items[产品]

for sale. The items vary in value there’s

everything from cheap

souvenirs[纪念品] to very expensive pieces of art.

There are many

local shops that combine various styles. Some sell very traditional items which are handcrafted locally or in Austria, and others sell more trendy[新潮的] items.

The best shopping is in Innsbruck’s Old City. This is where handmade crafts such as wood carvings, crystal, traditional clothing, and other souvenirs can be found.

Tirol is well known for its proximity[接近] to the Swarovski Crystal World Shop, which is located in Wattens. Most tourists make at least one trip to this shop to see the beautiful and shiny crystals and glassware. It would be

fascinating to tell friends and family back home that an item was bought in the actual Swarovski Shop in Austria.
