In ancient times, the desire for personal freedom, health and long life gave birth to this system of physical and mental exercise which has since spread throughout the world. The word Yoga means “to join or yoke together, and it brings body and mind together, forming one harmonious[和谐的] experience through three main Yoga practises: Physical Postures, Breathing, and Meditation[冥想].

The Physical Postures are designed to give one’s body certain pressure, so as to increase its efficiency[效率] and health. The Breathing Techniques are based on the concept that breath is the source of life in the body. These two systems prepare the body and mind for Meditation, making it easier for Yogis to achieve a quiet mind and be free from everyday stress.

There are different branches of Yoga, such as Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, etc. Among all these branches, Hatha Yoga is the most well-known. This branch aims to create the union of body and soul and make the body perfect and fill it with life force.

Though the practice of Yoga is closely associated with ancient beliefs and values, it also yields useful benefits for people’s practical, daily lives. The benefits that Yogis have been experiencing for thousands of years, such as relaxation of body and mind, weight control, and resistance[抵御] to disease, are only starting to be recognised by medical science today.

瑜伽的历史可以追溯到五千多年前。在古代,人们对个人自由、健康和长寿的渴望催生了这套针对肉体与精神的锻炼体系,并从此传播到世界各地。“瑜伽”这个词的意思是“连接或结合在一起”,它将身体与意念联系到一起,通过瑜伽的三个主要锻炼步骤(、调息和冥想)来达到和谐。
