D.Gray-Man:The Boy in Worlds of Black and White

Akuma (devil), monsters born from dead souls mistakenly recalled by their loved ones to the living world, are the weapons of the Earl of Millennium[千年], who is intent on[决心实行] the destruction of the world. They fire poisonous[有毒的] bullets that turn a human to dust. The more humans they kill, the more powerful they become.

Our hero, Allen Walker, has been cursed with an anti-Akuma weapon as his left arm and an eye that sees the former souls of the Akuma. He is also one of the few who contain nnocence,a substance[物质] that allows him to kill Akuma and fight the Earl. With these powers, he joins the Black Priest Organization as an Exorcist[驱魔师] and sets out with other Exorcists to stop the Earl’s attempts to annihilate[歼灭] the human race.

It’s not an exaggeration[夸张] to say that D.Gray-Man might have opened a new gate to the overall Shonen (Boy) genre. Colorful expressions, detailed line flow, a large amount of narratives[叙述] to reflect character emotions. There are many instances in D.Gray-Man that remind one of a Shojo (Girl) work, which makes the manga a target of criticism from certain Shonen readers. However, the same factor has also drawn an unexpected number of audiences to the war tale that would normally be cast away[抛弃] by female readers. After all, since The Prince of Tennis, the trend of including Shojo elements in Shonen mangas so as to attract female readers has become more and more obvious today.

Although a relatively new artist in the industry, the serialization[长篇连载] of D.Gray-Man already made Katsura Hoshino a famous name in today’s manga community. The manga is Hoshino’s very first serialization in a proper manga magazine. However, its extremely detailed art style sure doesn’t make the series seem like a debut[初次发表] work.

The story line is imaginative, but what makes Hoshino’s work outstanding is the art, a fabulous[惊人的] collection of images both elegant[漂亮的] and macabre[恐怖的], that should have much appeal[吸引力] for the crowd that enjoys Hellsing注 and similar Goth[哥特的] adventure mangas.
