We get off the Ajmer Shatabdi and drive some 30 odd km up the hill winding around the Ana Sagar Lake to get to the Sewara Hospitality Group’s pushkar resorts located in the Ganehhra village, 8 km outside Pushkar town.

I don’t know what I was expecting. But certainly not what I stepped into. Sprawling over 15 acres, surrounded by the Aravalli hills, this one turns out to be quaint, quiet gem with lush green landscaping and small water bodies.

We walk up to a reception housed in a pretty, traditional structure overlooking the expanse of the property and the swimming pool. We get a shot of history from the manager who tells us that the resort was built in 1998 with the coming of Kate Winslet to Pushkar for the shooting of her film Holy Smoke.

AMIDST NATURE

Having checked in, we walk through the meandering mud paths to our cottage set amidst creepers, climbers and flowering plants. There is a central common garden and a hub of quaint cottages around it. Amla trees bending with a heavy crop of fruit line our path; there are lots of the tangy green fruit shed on the ground. We joyously run around like children collecting amlas. It is a hugely liberating feeling!

ROOMS

The rooms are sweet and Spartan, which works well with the ecofriendly, ‘surrounded by nature’ feel of the resort. rajasthani mirror work cushions and wooden furniture adds a dash of local element to the rooms. Big windows help bring the outdoors inside. A small verandah links our twin rooms. Colourful ceramic plates and rough hued wood garden furniture against an ochre wall makes it cheerful and we spend our next couple of mornings there downing cups of tea and chatting.

UNWINDING

In the evening The Wadi Bar is set up under a tree in the lovely lawns. I felt the lighting was too dim, though the mood was nice. A bonfire, Rajasthani folk dancers and finger food make the night come alive. The only restaurant on the campus is a sloping terracotta tiled roof structure. It stands across the lawns all lit up against the dark night. The food is decent. Best to stick to Indian, though they do manage to churn up fairly edible Chinese, a bit of pastas and even a Thai curry and rice.

Besides pampering yourself at the Kaivalya Spa, you can also pay a visit to the world’s only Brahma Temple located in Pushkar. The hotel also organises trips on camel carts if you so wish. An organic fruit orchard with trees of mangoes, amla, guavas, bananas and an aviary with peacocks, guinea fowl, ducks and wild hens envelope us.
