Finn: Hello everyone, welcome to Ask About Britain from Learning English. I’m Finn.

Sun Chen: And I’m Sun Chen.

Finn: Today’s question comes from Jim in Hangzhou.

QUESTION:

Since there are so many local languages here in Britain, I want to ask if the people here can

understand each other if they are from really distant places.

Sun Chen: But is he correct to say that there are so many local languages in Britain, Finn?

Finn: Well, there are a few old local languages in Britain, like Welsh, Cornish[康瓦尔语] and Gaelic[盖尔特语].

But not many people speak these now as their first language. What there are a lot of in Britain are

local accents and dialects of English. Sometimes there can be problems if two people’s accents are very different. So, Sun Chen, we’re going on a quick tour of British accents.

Sun Chen: Where to first, Finn?

Finn: First stop is Northern Ireland. So we’re going to hear from Phoebe Wong, whose family is originally from South China, but she grew up in Northern

Ireland and she has an Irish accent.

It’s strange because whenever I go to England my accent changes. It doesn’t

actually stay strong for long. Because

I’ve always sort of picked up[学会] on

accents and I find it easier just to sort of like talk slower, and sort of like them I sort of mock[嘲弄地模仿] them and they mock me.

(奇怪的是,我每次去英国,口音都会改变。那种口音不会保持很久,因为我总是很容易就能学会各种口音,而且只要说慢一点儿就容易多了。我和当地人

Finn: So Phoebe says that her accent changes

easily. She says she’s always picked up on

accents. And I think she also has a good sense of humor. When in England, she says she mocks English people’s accents and they mock hers. Okay, Sun Chen. Well, I’m sorry but we have to leave Northern Ireland. Next stop is Wales. And we’re going to hear from some Welsh choir

singers.

Sun Chen: They sing in the choir.

Finn: Let’s find out what problem they have when traveling with this choir.

A: Do we talk fast? Because when I, I…quite often, when I’m away, people say, “Pardon?

Pardon?”

B: Yeah. We get that problem when we go away with the choir. We go away pretty often to parts of England. And they always say, “Oh, don’t he talk quick there? I don’t know what he’s saying.”

(甲:我们的语速太快了吗?因为当我……通常我外出时,人们总会说:“再说一遍好吗?再说一遍好吗?”

Finn: People think they talk too fast. Did you, Sun Chen?

Sun Chen: Yes.

Finn: Yes. The accent is very different from the Irish accent that we just heard a minute ago. And also the rhythm[韵律] is different.

Sun Chen: Yes. The rhythm. It’s almost like a song.

Finn: One other thing the intonation[语调]. It goes up and down. So these three things that’s speed, rhythm and intonation can be quite different with different British accents.

Sun Chen: So, what about you, Finn? Aren’t

you from Scotland?

Finn: Well, yes, I am. What we are going to hear next, though, are two Scottish men who have a strong Glasgow[(英)格拉斯哥] accent.

Sun Chen: Ah, the Glasgow accent.

Finn: And they’re talking about some

Scottish films having subtitles[字幕].

A: Aye (yes) even like all the Scottish films, like “Sweet Sixteen,” are subtitled now and things. And it’s pure annoying.

B: I do get annoyed when like I see ’hings (things) like ’at (that) subtitled for like people

in America and people doon (down) in

England cannae (can’t) understand what

we’re saying.

(甲:是的,即使像《甜蜜十六岁》这样的

苏格兰电影,现在都有字幕之类的东西。这实在让人恼火。
