LOS ANGELES―Two lost hikers who survived three nights in mountains thanks to supplies at a campsite of another hiker who disappeared last year described their suffering, saying they had “the real special thank” for the man who is probably dead.

The couple, Allen, 24, and Brandon Day, 28, were in Southern California for an important conference. They got lost on Saturday west of Palm Springs after wandering off a trail during what was supposed to be a day hike.

Prepared only for a brief hike, they wore light jackets and tennis shoes and had no food, spare clothing or mobile phone. With night closing in, they took shelter in a small cave and spent the night sleepless, freezing and hungry.

On Monday, they discovered a campsite in a dead valley. There was a sleeping mat, a backpack, a disposable razor(一次性剃刀), a spoon and tennis shoes. Day and Allen were delighted, thinking someone there could help them find the way out. But later they realized the place was deserted.

They found identification showing the camper was Donovan, 60, a retired social worker from Virginia. They learned later in his diary that he was an experienced hiker and he disappeared on May 2, 2005, in icy weather.

They found articles in his backpack: a warm sweater for Allen, dry socks for Day and matches. They lit a small signal fire to attract a helicopter crew in the distance, but the crew did not see them.

On Tuesday morning, Day created “a really big smoke signal” that finally attracted a helicopter crew. They were examined at a hospital and had only bruises(擦伤).

“We feel great. Were thankful. We feel like weve been given a second chance,” said Day, who expressed that they wouldnt give up hiking even after this experience.

With the Indian economy predicted to grow by 7.5 percent this year, experts say it could be time for Western CEOs to learn some lessons from Indian CEOs. The key differences between Indian and Western bosses are:

Social purpose

One of the most important things is that Indian leaders lead with a sense of social purpose. Every leader in India gave a specific social purpose as being the goal of their business. Those purposes ranged from improving healthcare to getting cell phones to people who didnt have access to communication tools. Having a social purpose motivates workers.

Invest in employees

Indian firms invest an enormous amount in their employees training and development. IT firms typically offer 60 days of formal training for newly hired workers and they even spend months training experienced workers. A study said that Western firms have largely abandoned investing in employees, seeing it as a waste if they quit. But Indian bosses believe that investing in employees ensures the quality of those who stay at the company.

Take the long view

Indian bosses stress far less on shareholders than it is typical at Western business. As a result theyre more able to take a longterm view. Western companies cant just ignore their shareholders, but their CEOs can do more to protect theiremployees from shortterm financial pressures, letting them get on with their jobs.

Work from their strengths

Western companies often think about strategy in terms of chasing customers or pursuing market opportunities, but Indian firms will more often start by identifying their strengths and customers needs, and then try to meet those needs.

Act as a role model

Being a personal role model for their employees is an amazing thing for a CEO. If Western bosses could think of themselves as role models, it would have a real impact on their workers.

10. Indian CEOs use their sense of social purpose to .

A. improve the workers healthcare system

B. provide cell phones to people in need

C. motivate and encourage their employees

D. promote the development of communication systems

11. Western firms have largely abandoned investing in employees training and development because .

A. it takes too long to complete the formal training of newly hired workers

B. they often hire experienced workers who dont need much training

C. they are afraid of the losses brought about by the resignation of employees

D. they dont care about the quality of the employees in their firms

12. Which of the following is TRUE about Western bosses?

We advance gradually from merely 6 (name) objects to understanding the thought in a line of Shakespeare.

At first, when my teacher told me about a new thing, I asked very 7 questions. My ideas were not clear, and I didnt know many. But as my knowledge of things 8 (grow) and I learned more and more words, I could ask more questions, and I would return again and again 9 the same subject, eager for more information.

在第17空后有from being down,也可以得到暗示。

前面的by the windows和后面的near where都说明此处填的是“地方(spot)”,the very spot强调“就是那个地方”。

后面的to make sure every table was clean and ready for the next customers表示目的,故此处指我怎么做才能达到此目的。

根据后面的took their plates back to the kitchen可知她们已经吃完了。且第13空后有they were leaving暗示。

put down “记下;镇压”;pick up “拾起,捡起”;take over “接管”;point out “指明(出)”。

During the debate, Group A said we should develop nuclear power stations, since it would bring much electricity to people, and reduce the pressure of using electricity in the world. Meanwhile, it can create more jobs, while Group B thought the government should limit the number of nuclear power stations, since they will cause all kinds of pollution, air pollution included. On Excessive Packaging

Nowadays the phenomena of excessive packaging of goods are popular in our society. The reasons are different as follows:

The first reason is that a large number of companies believe that they can attract customers attention and stimulate their purchasing desire by overpackaging their goods, thus gaining more profits. On the other hand, quite a number of consumers mistakenly hold that the more delicate the package is, the better the quality will be, thus encouraging excessive packaging.

In my point of view, excessive packaging has disastrous consequences, including the loss of precious/rare resources, excessive consumption of water and energy, and so on. To solve the problem, its necessary to take the following measures. First, laws and regulations must be made to restrict/limit excessive packaging of companies. In addition, we need to raise consumers awareness that excessive packaging doesnt equal high quality and advocate packaging recycling. (145 words)

W:Good morning, Mr. Robinson. Please feel free to talk about anything you like. I want this talk to feel like a conversation.

M:OK, Ill do my best to support your interview for your magazine.

Text 2

M:Youre so good at languages. You seem to understand anything you hear in Spanish. Any suggestions?

W:All you have to do is listen. That is more helpful than reading and speaking.

Text 3

M:I failed English last year and have to take it again this year.

W:Maybe its for the best. You could take this opportunity to improve your English.

Text 4

M:Hi, Susan. Long time no see. What are your new classmates like?

W:To tell you the truth, I dont like them.

M:Sorry to hear that. Whats wrong?

W:They make a lot of noise, even in class. I just cant concentrate. Some teachers often scold us for that.

Text 5

W:How can I help you, sir?

M:I have a reservation. My name is Frank.

W:Just a moment, Mr. Frank. Ah, yes, Mr. Frank. Suite number three. This way, please. Where is your luggage, sir?

M:I dont have any luggage.

Text 6

M:May I speak to the manager, please?

W:Im sorry. Mr. Smiths just gone to Hong Kong. He will be attending a conference this week and wont be back until Sunday. Would you like to leave a message?

M:No, thanks. I think I will wait until next Monday. Will he be available then?

W:Hold on a moment, please. Ill check his timetable for you... Yes, here... A trade delegation from Germany will be arriving at 10:00 on Monday morning and Mr. Smith is to meet them at the airport.

M:So Ill have to call him up early in the morning.

W:Certainly not. Bye.

Text 7

W:Why did you sell the car?

M:It gave me too much trouble. I was spending too much money on it. I was.., er... spending more money than it was worth. Unfortunately, of course, when you actually sell the car, youve already spent the money on it, so you lose both ways.

W:Well, what was the trouble with your old car?

M:The engine needed a lot of repairs and the wheels were giving me trouble now and then. When I set off on a journey, it gave me a sort of feeling that I might not get to the other end, so I decided to change it.

W:Is the new car good?

M:Yes, its newer, more comfortable, and it hasnt given me much trouble at all. When I set off, Im quite sure that Ill be able to get to the other end safely.

Text 8

M:Sue, there you are. Have you got time for a little chat?

W:Of course. What is it, Mike? Is something wrong?

M:No, not really. Well, you remember Miguel who stayed with us last summer?

W:No. But I remember you telling me about him. He was fond of sightseeing, wasnt he?

M:Thats right. Well, I got a letter from him this morning and he invited me to spend a holiday with his family this year. They get a big house by the fiver, and theyve got a boat. You know how crazy I am about boats.

W:Mike, thats great. What a wonderful chance for you!

M:Yes, but its not that simple.

W:Whats the problem?

M:Its Celia. You see, weve both been saving to go on a trip together this year.

W:Ah, I see. You dont want to disappoint her, of course.

M:Thats fight. Shed be so upset. Shes really been doing all sorts of jobs in her free time. Shes really been expecting a holiday. It seems so unfair.

W:Look, Mike. First, you must tell Celia about the invitation. Shell understand your problem. But why dont you tell Miguel about the plan you have already made with Celia? He might even suggest a good way to settle the problem.

Text 9

M:Hi, Bella. Have you heard from Jeff since he went abroad?

W:Yes, I have. Weve been keeping in touch regularly, and the longdistance phone bills are killing me.

M:Have you tried using Skype?

W:Skype? That sounds like the substance I use to clean my toilet.

M:No, no. Skype has nothing to do with toilets. Its a computer program that you can use to make free calls on the Internet.

W:Thanks, Ted, but Ive tried instant message services and they really frustrate me. Jeff is a really slow typist.

M:Theres no typing involved. It works kind of like a telephone.

W:How much do I have to pay to subscribe?

M:As I said, PC to PC, its free.

W:Thats so good that it cant be true.

Text 10

When friends come to visit us in the evening, very often they seem in a hurry and look at their watches. It isnt that our friends are all very busy; it is just that we havent got a television. People think that we are very strange. “But what do you do in the evenings?” they are always asking. The answer is simple. Both my wife and I have hobbies. We certainly dont spend our evenings stating at the wall. My wife enjoys cooking and often attends evening classes in foreign languages. This is particularly useful as we always go abroad for our holidays. I am always busy with my collection. Both of us enjoy listening to music, singing and playing chess together.

When there are power cuts we all have no electricity in the house. My friends dont know what to do. On such evenings our house is very full as they all come to us. They all have a good time. Instead of sitting in silence in front of the television, everybody talks and plays games. Yes, life is certainly possible without television.
