Epicurean exhibition Down Under

Here’s a dream experience for food lovers that promises all the pleasure and not a single calorie gained! Gusto, at the Victoria State Library in Melbourne, is an exhibition featuring a cornucopia of gastronomic treasures drawn from the collections of the National Archive and the Art Gallery of Ballarat and loans from corporate collections like Kraft and Carlton United Breweries. The exhibition, which runs through September, includes the first Australian cookbook, published in 1864 and an original World War I army biscuit! A great way to delve into a range of subjects like the history of viticulture in Victoria and indigenous food, Gusto is complemented by tours, panel discussions, curator talks, special food events and children’s activities.

Kyoto’s best in London

If you plan to be in London this September, you’ll be in time for the opening of Chrysan, the long-awaited Japanese restaurant, at Broadgate West. What makes it especially exciting is the presence of top Kyoto chef Yoshihiro Murata. In Japan, Murata runs Kikunoi Honten, a three time three Michelinstarred restaurant and Roan Kikunoi (both in Kyoto) and Akasaka Kikunoi in Tokyo. Chrysan will be less formal than his Kyoto restaurant but will have extensive à la carte and tasting menus. There will also be a bar, NeNe, serving cocktails and a lighter menu.

Take a cruise, taste the harvest

A special treat for wine-lovers, the cruise liner Celebrity Constellation will sail from Southampton to some of the top-producing wine regions in Europe between September–November. Yes, it’s that time of the year again. Oktoberfest begins September 22 in Munich. For beer lovers, the world’s largest beer fest and sausage blowout is the place to be. The revelry includes a parade of bar owners and brewers on horse-drawn carriages, beer tents, carnivals, food stalls and endless fun. The must-catch events are the folklore parade and the gun salute. Spice it up

The Caribbean calls out to food lovers, for a taste of Spices of the Caribbean at the Jade Mountain Resort in St Lucia. The three-day event highlights the tropical cuisine of the island with special emphasis on fiery flavours. A cocktail party and finger food kicks off the event.
