Mark was an 11-year-old orphan. He was a sweet and gentle child.

I had not noticed Mark particularly until he began staying after class each day to help me straighten up the room. We did this quietly，not speaking much. When we did talk，Mark spoke mostly of his mother. Though he was quite small when she died，he remembered a kind，gentle， loving woman.

As Christmas drew near however，Mark failed to stay after school each day. I stopped him one afternoon and asked why he no longer helped me in the room. I told him how much I had missed him，and his large gray eyes lit up eagerly as he replied，“Did you really miss me？”

“I was making you a surprise，” he whispered confidentially.“It’s for Christmas.” With that， he became embarrassed and dashed from the room.

Finally came the last school day before Christmas. Mark crept slowly into the room that afternoon with his hands concealing something behind his back. “I have your present，”he said timidly.“I hope you like it.”He held out his hands，and there lying in his small palms was a tiny wooden box.

“It’s beautiful，Mark. Is there something in it？”I asked opening the top to look inside.

“Oh，you can’t see what’s in it，”he replied.“And you can’t touch it，or taste it or feel it， but mother always said it makes you feel good all the time.”

I gazed into the empty box. “What is it，Mark，that will make me feel so good？”I asked gently.

“It’s love，”he whispered softly.“And mother always said it’s best when you give it away.”

马克是个11岁的孤儿。他是个可爱温和的孩子。

直到马克开始每天放学后都留下来帮我整理教室，我才特别注意到他。我们安静地整理教室。虽然我们不怎么说话，可是一旦聊起来，马克说的更多的都是关于他妈妈的事。尽管妈妈去世时，他还很小，他仍记得妈妈是一个善良、温柔、充满爱心的女性。

当圣诞节临近的时候，马克不再每天放学后都留下来。一天下午，我叫住了他，问他为什么不再帮我整理教室。我告诉他我很想他，他大大的灰色的眼睛立刻变得有神起来，急切地说：“你真的想我吗？”

“我在给你准备一个惊喜，”他神秘地小声说，“是为圣诞节准备的。”说完后，他有点儿不好意思，急忙跑出教室。

终于，圣诞节前学校上课的最后一天到了。那天下午，马克悄悄地走进教室，步子缓慢，手里拿着东在身后。“我给你带了礼物，”他害羞地说，“我希望你会喜欢。”他伸出双手，手心里是一个小小的木头盒子。

“很漂亮，马克。里面有东西吗？”我一边问，一边打开盒盖往里看。

“哦，你看不见里面有什么，”他回答说，“你也摸不到，尝不到，感觉不到，但是妈妈总是说它会让你永远感到幸福。”

我盯着空盒子温和地问：“马克，里面是什么会让我感到如此幸福？”

“是爱，”他轻声说，“妈妈总是说当你把爱送给别人时，它才是最完美的。”
