Abstract:Whether an English class will be successful or not has much to do with lead-in.A good lead-in designed well can build a relaxing atmosphere and therefore make the class lively and interesting.To call up the interest of the students at the very beginning of each class,the English teacher should be well prepared and realize the importance of lead-in and know clearly that a well designed lead-in matters a lot.

Ⅰ.The basic principles of lead-in

In order to design wonderful lead-in,the teacher has to prepare a lot,like knowing how the students think actually and what the reality is exactly like and besides having the ability to combine them.

Ⅱ.The techniques of lead-in

(1)Pictures

Open the textbooks,you may find so many pictures in each unit,which are closely related to the teaching materials.

(2)Multi-media

The application of multimedia technology is a great success in english class teaching process,which combines modern science with advanced teaching theories.I think it can mobilize their desire for knowledge and offer questions for them to think about.

(3)Revision

As an old saying goes,“New knowledge begins with revision.”Lead-in by revising what is taught in the previous class is a frequently used way to begin a new lesson.By asking and reviewing one or two questions closely related to new teaching contents,the students will think positively.

(4)Background knowledge

As for some passages about some historical events,I prefer starting my class by introducing some information of the writers and the background of the events;while for some passages about popular science,I would like to provide the students with some facts and examples.

(5).A puzzle as a lead-in

A question raised at the very beginning of the class can arouse the students great interest and they feel they cant wait to find out the truth.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that lead-in takes only a short time of the whole class,the significant role it plays in deciding whether the class will go on smoothly and will be carried out successfully cant be ignored without consideration.Any English teacher has to think about how to design each lead-in before beginning each class and great efforts should be made to arouse the students interest and keep their interest firmly in what they are going to learn.Interest is the best teacher,which exactly indicates the function of the teacher,who should be able to help the students to find the beauty and the charm of the English language and guide them to the secret of learning English well.
