Usually denmark is known to the chinese people for the famous tales by the writer Hans Christian Andersen or the toy company LEGO. But that is not the only thing that the Danes have to offer. Denmark is also known for its environmental protection, increasingly innovative design and high technologies. Recently the Minister of Trade from Denmark Pia Olsen Dyhr was interviewed by the newspaper China Busines Network(CBN). She explained that the clean technology, the food safety, the health and the life science are some of the things that Denmark is good at and that these attract Chinese entrepreneurs. The minister also explained that about 80 Chinese enterprises already have established business in Denmark. She hopes, and is confident, that the number will double by 2016.

Number one in trade

The number of Chinese investors in Denmark is not overwhelming but it has slightly been growing for the past few years. A recent study from 2013 made by the World Bank shows that Denmark is the easiest and best European country for trade and it seems like the Chinese companies have noticed that. At the moment there are about 80 Chines enterprises establishing business in Denmark.

“Investing in Denmark is a way to get access to innova- tion networks and knowledge. The Chinese companies can get access to technology that does not necessarily exist in China. You must remember that Denmark is the leading country when it comes to biotech and wind energy”, explains the Danish researcher Stine Haakonsson who works at Copenhagen Business School. She specializes in China, globalisation and entrepreneurship.

When the Chinese companies do business and invest in Denmark they obtain a certain certificate showing that the products that are being produced have a certain standard. Stine Haakonsson believes that this is one of the advantages by doing investments in Denmark because the certificate makes it easier for the Chinese companies to do business in other European countries. The companies are thereby able to expand and develop their businesses and products.

Challenges when investing in Denmark

Even though Denmark is a great country to invest in Stine Haakonsson mentions that there also are some challenges a company has to be aware of when establishing.

“First of all the visa and tax system is very difficult for a foreigner to understand. It’s not easy to understand the public system if you don’t speak or understand the Danish lan-guage,” Stine Haakonsson says.

Furthermore Stine Haakonsson also mentions that the cultural barriers can be a challenge, and because of the cultural barriers in particular she recommends Chinese companies to hire Danish employees in order to make the cultural differences easier:

“The people and companies I have met who are successful have hired Danish researchers. If you do not hire the right people, you cannot or it will be difficult to create the network in Denmark as required.”

This means that it is important to find a balance and combine the two cultures in order to make the best out of establishing business and invest in Denmark.

Chinese investments in Denmark

Chinese Titan Wind Energy is one of the companies that have invested and bought a part of a Danish company. One year ago the company acquired the Danish company Vesta’s wind tower facility and established a European HQ in the city Varde, Denmark. Another company who is interested in investing in Denmark is an organization named Aigo Entrepreneur Alliance (AEA red.). The company’s founder is Mr. Feng Jun and he gives several different reasons for why to invest in Denmark:

“Denmark’s strong focus on design and innovation enables Chinese brands to learn from and collaborate with Danish companies in order to become successful in the rest of Europe. Denmark also provides good opportunities for partnerships with universities and design institutions in order to further develop our brands, ” Mr. Feng Jun says.

The members of Aigo Entrepreneur Alliance Company include leading companies within industries such as maritime, electronics, clothing and real estate. And the goal of the The Aigo Entrepreneur Alliance Company is therefor to promote these privately-owned Chinese brands globally.

According to the Danish researcher Stine Haakonsson it is important to find a good business partner if you want to invest in Denmark:

“It’s important to have a partner that knows how things work in the specific country that you want to invest in. The partner can help you understand the market but also help you with the suppliers. The idea is to create a good network and to find good suppliers and customers. Basically, the network is the key to success,” she says.

This means that foreigners can have some great advantages by investing in Denmark. But it is also important to be aware of the difficulties that can occur.
