Americans have struggled to balance their desire to play video games with the need to obtain a higher education. However, with the rise of pop culture studies,

the dilemma[进退两难的局面] no longer troubles students these days. In many universities across the States, you’ll find strange courses that would make under-

water basket-weaving[编织] seem like a useful trade.

21st Century Skills in StarCraft

(University of Florida

Everyone can agree that, according to this course’s official description, it’s “important for professionals to be highly proficient[精通的] in skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, resource management and adaptive[适应的] decision making.” In Florida this semester, they’ve determined that one of the better ways to gain those abilities is to play StarCraft.

Any chance to play real-time strategy[策略] games is fine with us, though we have to question

if the talent one displays for in-game resource management properly translates to an offline

experience.

Guitar Heroes (and Heroines):

Music, Video Games and the Nature of Human Cognition[

(New York University

This headline-grabbing class of 2009 sounded like the most awesome use of tuition[学费] dollars ever. “Guitar Hero is a good tool for teaching,”

psychology[心理学] professor Gary Marcus said, “and I’m interested in learning.”

Parents were in an uproar[骚动]. “I just wrote a big check here,” one complained. “I’m not paying for my son to study video games.” Apparently[显然] you are, Dad.

Game Theory: Applications[应用] to StarCraft

(University of California at Berkeley

The objective of the 2009, student-led Berkeley

course was to teach students to better enjoy “the art of competitive StarCraft.” Its syllabus[课程大纲]

included Sun Tzu’s The Art of War and Korean

StarCraft celebrity Lim Yo-hwan’s autobiography[自传],

Crazy as Me, as well as 90-minute lectures. The rest of the course? Sitting at a computer and playing StarCraft for hours on end.

The Cape[披风] and the Cowl[斗篷]:

The Literary, Televised and Film History of Batman

(Rice University

While not as hands-on[实际动手做的] as the previous entries[项目], undergraduates in Rice’s 2009 student-led Batman class did work hard to study “the necessity of the Joker,” as well as “the viability[生存能力] of the Bat-family.”

By the end of the course, students were expected to understand “that

Batman isn’t just a crazed brute[

tormenting[折磨] his victims out of

nihilistic[无政府主义的] hatred.” That actually makes this class sound like a big waste of time, as anyone who’s read Batman: Year One knows that he is just trying to make the streets of Gotham safe outside of a corrupt[腐败的] police department!
