Neo-soul songstress Corinne Bailey Rae was born in Leeds, England, in 1979 to a British mother and West Indian father. Displaying an interest in music from an early age, Rae studied classical violin until she acquired an electric guitar in her early teens. Rae formed her first band, the all-female indie rock outfit Helen. Despite developing a strong local following, the band ultimately folded and Rae enrolled at Leeds University to study English literature. While at university, a job at a jazz club inspired her more soul-oriented leanings and she began writing songs. Eventually, she scored a record deal with EMI and released her self-titled debut solo album in 2006.

Straight Up is the second album from Australian boy band North. It contains a variety of love songs and ballads, including a cover version of California Dreaming, the classic 1960s hit by the The Mammas And The Papas. North's greatest popularity is in South-East Asia, and the band regularly tour Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Live 8 was a series of free benefit concerts that took place in July 2005, in the G8 nations (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and the Russian Federation) and South Africa. Running parallel with the UK's Make Poverty History campaign, the shows planned to pressure world leaders to drop the debt of the world's poorest nations, increase and improve aid, and negotiate fairer trade rules in the interest of poorer countries. More than 1,000 musicians performed at the concerts, including Will Smith, Destiny's Child, Sting, Youssou N'Dour and a re-united Pink Floyd.
