在英语当中，有些词汇在词形上非常相似，经常会被搞混和误用，而本期《CAREFUL》栏目我们就来关注两组常见的易混词汇，辨析它们的用法。

Compliment V.S. Complement

“complement”和“compliment”这两个词不仅词形相象，发音接近，而且在词性上都可以活用，所以经常会被弄混了。不过，它们在语意上可并没有什么关联性。

当用做名词时，“complement”的意思是“起补足或完善作用的事物”，而“compliment”的意思是“表示谦恭或称赞

的言行”。

Examples:The antique silver was a complement to the beautifully set table.

这个古董银制餐具弥补了这张摆设美观的桌子的不足之处。

They gave us a compliment on our beautifully set table.

他们对我们这张摆设美观的桌子表示称赞。

当用做动词时，“complement”的意思是“补充”、“补足”、“与……互补”；而“compliment”的意思是“恭维”、“夸奖”。

Examples:The woodwind section complements the strings in this piece of music.

木管乐器的乐章弥补了这首曲子中弦乐部分的不足。

They complimented him for his courage.

他们对他的勇气表示赞许。

“complement”和“compliment”的形容词形式也非常相象，分别是“complementary”和“complimentary”。其中，“complementary”表示“互相补足的”的意味，而“complementary”在表示“称赞”的意味之外，还有一层“免费赠送”的意思。

Examples:The furniture and carpets are in complementary colours.

家具和地毯在色彩上是互补的。

The concert received complimentary reviews.

这场音乐会获得了好评。

The author will receive several complimentary copies of the book.

作者将会得到该书的几册赠送本。

All together V.S. Altogether

“all together”和“altogether”在语法功能上是一样的，都是作为状语使用，而且在读音上几乎是完全相同的，不过，在具体使用和语意上是有差别的。

“all together”用来表示人或物被当作一个整体来看待。另外，无论“all”和“together”是分开还是合在一起使用，表达的意思都是相同的。

Examples: We put the pots and pans all together on the shelf.

我们把所有炊具都放在了架子上。

We put all the pots and pans together on the shelf.

我们把所有炊具都放在了架子上。

而“altogether”则主要是“完全地”、“全然”的意思，表示一种程度。

Examples: I am altogether pleased to be receiving this award.

拿到这个奖项我十分高兴。

I'm not altogether sure this is the right answer.

我不是完全确定这就是正确答案
