(Scouts come to visit Billy’s family.)
Billy’s Dad: Tell me, why Billy? What is it that makes him special?
Scout Martinez: Very rare do you come upon a young man like Billy who can run, who can field, who can throw, who can hit, and who can hit with power. Those five tools, you don’t see that very often.
Scout Barry: Most of the youngsters we…that we…we have an interest in have one or two tools, and we’re hoping to develop an extra one. Your son has five. I mean, we’re look…we’re looking at a guy that’s a potential superstar for us in New York and the time is right now to get him started.
Scout Martinez: We’re prepared to make a sizable financial commitment. The Mets are gonna stand behind Billy because we expect him to be our big-league center fielder. This check here well represents the offer that…that the New York Mets would be making to Billy.
Billy’s Mom: You do know that he’s been accepted to Stanford on a full scholarship?
Scout Martinez: I do.
Billy’s Mom: So he can do both?
Scout Martinez: Unfortunately, he can’t do Stanford and professional baseball. He would have to pick one or the other. If he wants to be a center fielder for the New York Mets, if he wants to be a baseball player, he really needs to accept this as life’s first occupation, or a first career. We’re all told at some point in time, Billy, that we…we can no longer play the children’s game. We just don’t…don’t know when that’s gonna be. Some of us are told at 18, some of us are told at 40, but we’re all told. But this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We want you badly, and we think that this amount of money expresses that desire.
Billy’s Dad: Billy, this is your decision, and whatever that decision is, you know it’s fine with your mother and I.

Grady: Major League Baseball and its fans, they’re gonna be more than happy to throw you and Google Boy under the bus if you keep doing what you’re doing here. You don’t put a team together with a computer, Billy.
Billy: No?
Grady: No. Baseball isn’t just numbers. It’s not science. If it was, then anybody could do what we’re doing, but they can’t, because they don’t know what we know. They don’t have our experience and they don’t have our 2)intuition.
Billy: OK.
Grady: Billy, you got a kid in there that’s got a degree in economics from Yale. You got a scout here with 29 years of baseball experience. You’re listening to the wrong one. Now, there are 3)intangibles that only baseball people understand. You’re discounting what scouts have done for 150 years? Even yourself?
Billy: Adapt or die.
Grady: This is about you and your shit, isn’t it? Twenty years ago, some scout got it wrong.
Billy: Whoa. OK. OK.
Grady: Now you are gonna declare war on the whole system.
Billy: OK, OK, my turn. You don’t have a crystal ball. You can’t look at a kid and predict his future any more than I can. I’ve sat at those kitchen tables with you and listened to you tell those parents, “When I know, I know. And when it comes to your son, I know.” And you don’t. You don’t.
Grady: OK. I don’t give a shit about friendship, this situation, or the past. Major League Baseball thinks the way I think. You’re not gonna win. And I’ll give you a nickel’s worth of free advice. You’re never gonna get another job when 4)Schott fires you after this 5)catastrophic season you’re about to set us all up for. And you’re gonna to explain to your kid why you’re working at 6)Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Billy: I’m not gonna fire you, Grady.
Grady: F**k you, Billy.
Billy: Now I will.

Billy: And what’s the point?
Pete: We just got the record.
Billy: Man, I’ve been doing this for...listen, man. I’ve been in this game a long time. I’m not in it for a record, I’ll tell you that. I’m not in it for a ring. That’s when people get hurt. If we don’t win the last game of the Series, they’ll dismiss us.
Pete: Billy…
Billy: I know these guys. I know the way they think, and they will erase us. And everything we’ve done here, none of it’ll matter. Any other team wins the World Series, good for them. They’re drinking champagne, they get a ring. But if we win, on our budget, with this team...we’ll change the game. And that’s what I want. I want it to mean something.
(After Oakland Athletics loses in the play-offs)
Pete: (Throwing a baseball at Billy) Heads up.
Billy: What was that?
Pete: Sorry. I…I don’t know.
Billy: What the hell was that? You 7)knucklehead.
Pete: How was Boston?
Billy: Impressive.
Pete: Did Henry make you a good offer, at least?
Billy: Doesn’t matter.
Pete: What was it?
Billy: Doesn’t matter.
Pete: What was it?
Billy: Doesn’t matter.
Pete: What was it?
(Billy hands Pete a check.)
Pete: That makes you the highest-paid GM in the history of sports.
Billy: So? So what? You know, I made one decision in my life based on money. And I swore I would never do it again.
Pete: You’re not doing it for the money.
Billy: No?
Pete: No. You’re doing it for what the money says. And it says what it says to any player that makes big money. That they’re worth it.
Billy: What a dump. I really wanted to win here. I really did.
Pete: I think you won pretty big, Billy.
Billy: Pete, we lost. We lost.
Pete: It’s only been a few days. You gotta give yourself some time to get over it.
Billy: Man, I don’t…I…I don’t get over these things. Ever.
Pete: Come with me to the video room. I wanna show you something.
Billy: No, man, I’m not up for film right now.
Pete: Come on. Seriously. Come on, Billy. Come on.
孰胜孰负
