Every day people often saw a boy sing in a park. In fact, they didn’t know the fact that this boy had cancer for a long time and he had no more time left. He looked very optimistic and he didn’t feel self-contemptuous (自卑的) at all.

One day, he was wandering in the park. Suddenly a good smell flew over and it attracted him to come under a peach tree. To his joy, he saw a girl dancing pleasingly.

“You are great! You look like a dancing butterfly!” he said after watching her for a long time.

“Thank you!” this girl looked up and said shyly.

“Are you blind?” said the boy amazedly.

The girl made no reply, but she nodded hard.

“Sorry!I didn’t mean to hurt you!” said the boy in a hurry.

“Never mind!” the girl seemed to be easy.

They knew each other in this way.

From then on, they often met each other. And while the boy was singing, the girl danced for him.

Time passed quickly! Many days passed before they knew it.

“Look! How beautiful the peach blossoms are! They are just like you!” said the

“I’m sorry!” the boy couldn’t help regretting, he felt his heart bitten hard by a snake, “How foolish I am! How can I say such words before her?” His heart was soon covered by an inexplicable idea.

Several days later, the girl told the boy happily that her eyes would be cured quickly because someone was willing to contribute his cornea(眼角膜) to her. Hearing the girl’s words, the boy also smiled happily.

That day, darkness seemed to come earlier than ever. The boy said many words to the girl:“I had never believed there was forever in the world. But I know I am mistaken! There is forever indeed―friendship. Now I have to go and I am afraid that we can’t meet each other again, either. I will treasure our friendship up in my memory!”

Hearing the boy’s words, the girl couldn’t help crying. Then the boy sang again while the girl was dancing.

Later the boy went quietly, but he was regretless, because he gave the last song in his life to the girl.

Soon the girl’s operation succeeded, she saw everything and knew the truth, too. To people’s surprise, the peach tree didn’t blossom that year.

The expression“fireworks” gets its meaning from the fireworks that people shoot into the sky when they are celebrating a great event. Rockets explode to fill the dark night sky with bright reds and blues, with yellows and greens and whites.

The expression also means a great show of noisy anger, or something exciting. For example, a defense lawyer in a court trial may become very emotional in arguing with the government lawyer about evidence affecting the accused. The judge finally stops the loud argument and calls the two lawyers forward. He tells them, “I want no more of these fireworks in my courtroom.”

Another kind of fireworks can be any event or activity that is especially exciting. One such event is falling in love. If anything can produce fireworks, it is a sweetheart’s kiss or the touch of a lover’s hand. Often movie or television cartoons show fireworks to represent the excitement of a kiss.

People use the expression “fireworks” throughout the year. But if you live in the United States and want to see real fireworks, the best time of the year is about now. The July 4th is Independence Day in the United States. Americans traditionally celebrate their nation’s freedom with giant public parties and fireworks at night.

In Washington, for example, large crowds gather near the Washington Monument to listen to music and watch a huge fireworks show. In other cities and smaller towns, local people listen to band concerts and watch fireworks explode in a dark sky.

Many other countries around the world also enjoy the tradition of exploding fireworks on special days. In Australia, the city of Sydney begins each New Year with a fireworks show at midnight. China is the birthplace of fireworks. Large fireworks shows were held often during earlier times in China. Now, people use small fireworks to help celebrate weddings and birthdays.

France also has a great fireworks tradition. A large fireworks show always takes place on Bastille Day which celebrates the beginning of the French Revolution. The French city of Cannes holds an international fireworks competition each year in July and August.

In India, people have been using fireworks for more than five hundred years. A great Indian fireworks show takes place during the religious celebration of Diwali every autumn.

Fireworks shows are popular around the world. But if I do not end this program right now, there will be fireworks from my producer.

Like that of her own character, Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling’s life has the legend(传奇) of a fairy tale. Divorced(离婚), living on public assistance in a tiny Edinburgh flat with her infant daughter, Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at a table in a cafe during her daughter’s naps―and it was Harry Potter that helped her.

Rowling remembers that she always wanted to be a writer in the future and that the first story she actually wrote down, when she was five or six, was a story about a rabbit called Rabbit. Many of her favorite memories center around hearing The Wind in the Willows read aloud by her father when she was ill, enjoying the fantastic adventure stories of E. Nesbit.

At Exeter University Rowling took her degree in French and spent one year studying in Paris. After college she moved to London to work for Amnesty International as a researcher and secretary. The best thing about working in an office, she has said, was typing up stories on the computer when no one was watching. During this time, on a particularly long train ride from Manchester to London in the summer of 1990, the idea came to her of a boy who is a wizard(男巫) and doesn’t know it. He attends a school for wizardry―she could see him very plainly in her mind. By the time the train pulled into King’s Cross Station four hours later, many of the characters and the early stages of the plot were fully formed in her head. The story took further shape as she continued working on it in pubs and cafes over her lunch hours.

In 1992, Rowling left off working in offices and moved to Portugal to teach English as a second language. She worked afternoons and evenings, leaving mornings free for writing. After her marriage to a Portuguese TV journalist ended in divorce, Rowling returned to Britain with her infant daughter and a suitcase full of Harry Potter notes and chapters. She settled in Edinburgh to be near her sister and set out to finish the book before looking for a teaching job. Wheeling her daughter’s carriage around the city to escape their tiny, cold apartment, she would enter coffee shops to write when the baby fell asleep. In this way she finished the book and started sending it to publishers. It was rejected several times before she found a London agent, chosen because she liked his name―Christopher Little, who sold the manuscript to Bloomsbury Children’s Books.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in June 1997 and achieved a success.

1. Why does the writer of this passage say “it was Harry Potter that helped her”?

A. Because the boy Harry Potter has become familiar to readers.

B. Because she came out of the low spirits of divorce.

C. Because she was admitted into Exeter University.

D. Because she realized her childhood dream by writing Harry Potter.

2. From the passage, we can infer that in order to finish writing Harry Potter, _____.

A. Rowling gave up her job

B. Rowling used all the time she could

C. Rowling divorced her former husband

D. Rowing heard the stories read by her father

3. What can we learn about J.K. Rowling from this passage?

A. She is a woman with a strong will.

B. She was not satisfied with the jobs she had.

C. She likes writing poems.

D. Coffee could give her the inspiration for her writing.

4. What does this passage mainly talk about?

A. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

B. J.K. Rowling and her Harry Potter.

C. J.K. Rowling’s life.

D. How Harry Potter was popular.

A

下文中当女孩告诉男孩“her eyes would be cured quickly because someone was willing to contribute his cornea for her”时,男孩开心地笑了;倒数第二段中女孩手术后“saw everything and knew the truth”,由此可推测是男孩把自己的眼角膜捐给了女孩。

The Last Song in Life一语双关,既指男孩将最后一首歌献给了女孩,也指他将自己的角膜献给了女孩。

B

根据第四段第二句“But if you live in the United States and want to see real fireworks, the best time of the year is about now.”及第三句中的“the Fourth of July”可推知now指的应该是七月初。

根据第六段中的“China is the birthplace of fireworks.”

由第二段第一句中的“she always wanted to be a writer in the future”及文末的“achieved a success”可知答案为D。
