In 2010, over 500 million games were sold worldwide. Figures tell us that by 2014 the gaming industry will be generating revenues of over $44 billion. Now that is a lot of money. This is why we see so many launches happening every month across various game platforms. And for Urban India gaming is now an alternative source of entertainment. And while the good old PC remains the first choice for gaming, the weapons of mass entertainment are fast becoming the gaming consoles—already Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3 are huge favourites.

The launch of the motion-sensing Kinect saw a big growth in sales of the Xbox and the accessory. This was bound to happen as the company had made the console controller obsolete, with the player’s body the new controller. Is it a gimmick or does it really work? Well, you will have to use Kinect to believe it does work as claimed. The early doubts were about whether there would be enough games developed to make Kinect worthwhile. Wait till you get your hands on the next generation of Kinect games for the answer.

The PS3 also adapted to gesture control and has gone the Nintendo Wii way. The introduction of the Move controller helped Sony boost sales. This bulbous wand controller is more precise than the Wii-mote. There are plenty of Move games available that exploit Move’s gesture power. 3D is also making its way into gaming. PS3 is now 3D-ready and is compatible with any 3D-ready Sony TV . Now if only 3D came without glasses, we’d be in gaming heaven. Sony has also launched the new version of PSP called the PSP Vita. And what do you get when you combine PSP features with a mobile phone? You get Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play. It is a mobile phone version of the PSP that is already out in the market.

What takes the ball and runs is Nintendo’s 3DS—an upgrade to its handheld gaming device, the DS. The new gizmo’s screen facilitates depth-of-field viewing. If you play with it, you will probably find that the 3D isn’t perfect—but look at the positive side: it does not require any glasses for the 3D effect to be experienced.

Gaming has also shifted base to other platforms—like tablets. Made popular by Apple with its iPad, tablets are the perfect gaming destinations. They are right for the lap for casual gamers. Like apps for mobile phones, thousands of games are being developed for the tablet platform every month and these are not just the arcade games. Game manufacturers like EA are rerigging their hot-selling titles—such as Need for Speed andFifa—for this platform. With games on PCs, consoles, hand-helds, mobile phones and tablets, gaming is poised for a big leap.
