It took a bit of ingenuity to marry the computer to a mobile phone, but after the iPhone was launched three years ago, it was inevitable that Apple would conceptualise a phone-and-computer combo and the path inexorably led to the iPad. The computer in the form of a slim slab that could hide in a jacket pocket moved from Tom Cruise and Peirce Brosnan movies into our lives in 2010 with the launch of the Apple device. Success begets success, so they say, and post the iPad, tablets went right up to the top of the agenda of tech companies. From major brands like Dell, Samsung and HP to smaller ones like Binatone and Viewsonic, the tablet became the prescribed device for commercial weight gain. India still waits for the iPad to vend officially, but the people have numerous options available. The Samsung Galaxy Tab has been wildly successful across the world and made up for the half-year lag between the iPad’s and its debut by quickly going up the sales chart. And there are others. Tablets attract by their abilities and the convenience they promise. They relieve rat-race stress by easing things out. They mimic the netbooks, but come with qualities that outshine those of the older technology.

WHAT ARE TABLETS?

It’s not as if tablets are a new phenomenon. The earlier tablets were PCs with 180 degree rotating touch screens. The latest avatars threw the physical keyboards into the recycle bin, hid the rest of the machinery behind the screen and took on coquettish forms. Tiny chipsets, like Nvidia’s Tegra, and developments in the mobile operating system sector helped the tablet come alive. The iOS was tweaked for the iPad, others harness Google’s Android mobile platform. Some will now be based on Microsoft’s Windows 7, while BlackBerry will come out with one running on a special BlackBerry OS. Using the mobile brains also means tablets can boost their utility with thousands of apps available on Apple iTunes store or Android Market and the like.

WHY A TABLET?

Well it’s simple, because the tablet is the future. It has the looks, brains and features to make it worth every step you take with it in tandem. A tablet can compute, can be used to browse the Web, can double up as your PMP , constitute your 3G connectivity and do much more. Yes, much more.

OLIVEPAD V-T100 (` 24,000)

Appearance: This was the very first 3G tablet to have been launched in India and at the time, looked pretty nice. A couple of kinks here and there, but digestible. Recently Viewsonic launched a similar-looking tablet. Both look exactly the same—were both them produced in the same factory in China?

Characteristics:It has an ARM11 600 MHz processor, which is fairly fast. The T100 comes with a good touch screen that responds well to the tap. The sound over the dual speakers along the sides is good too. It also has 3G which lets you browse the Net at blitz speeds. Dual cameras come as the part of the package. However, if you want to click images you need to slot in a memory card as the in-built memory is reserved for the OS.

Bottom Line:Well, you couldn’t ask for a better product at this price. That’s why it remains on the top rungs.

VIEWSONIC VIEWPAD 10(` 38,000)

Appearance: It is one of the best looking tablets available today. Everything is placed well around the screen. The skin is tough and firm. The buttons feel nice and respond properly. It even has two USB ports to connect to various USB devices. But what takes the cake is the 10-inch super bright and sharp display.

Characteristics:Where shall we begin? This tablet has double the number of features that other tablet have. First up, it has a dual booting option and so can work on both Windows 7 and Android platforms. These can be accessed from the startup screen. Both load rapidly as do applications. The capacitive touchscreen handles taps well. What further makes it a darling is its netbook-like components.

Bottom line:Must grab tablet for business users. Offers the rare combination of beauty and brains—packs in lots of features in a small and light shell. Price could have been lower, but if it works efficiently, why crib?

DELL STREAK(` 35,000)

Appearance: Dell has impressed with most of its laptops. We believe the same team that designed the remarkable XPS series laptops designed this titillating little machine. It is one the smallest tablets, but its size is not a reflection of its power. The casing is solid and stays smudge free, well, the screen not so much.

Characteristics:This is a tablet to reckon with, starting with the sharp 5-inch screen to the audio to the set of preloaded applications. Because of its size, some say it is like a large mobile phone. Actually you can’t push it into your jeans pocket, though a jacket pocket might accommodate it. It is also a trifle too big to be held against the ear like a phone. The Streak comes with a better camera (5 MP) than most tablets. Videos and pictures come out good. Its Wi-Fi reacts well and connects quickly. If something can be held against it, it is the life of the battery.

Bottom line:It comes with a superior Dell warranty, which takes care of all the after sales worry. A good device for folks who want tablet functions in a small form factor.

LACS MAGNUM LA127 (` 16,990)

Appearance: With the design being minimalistic, you don’t get too many things to fidget around with on the shell. The screen has a matte finish which prevents finger smears. It is smallest among the tablets and fits in easily in the trouser pocket.

Characteristics:Currently, it runs on the Windows CE operating system. It is not the fastest or brightest of the lot but it does get the job done. The configuration and specifications remain basic. Wi-Fi is missing and so is 3G. But it has Bluetooth, which makes it possible to connect the device to a mobile and then use it as a modem. The loud speaker is not very voluble, so we suggest you keep the headphones handy if you want to enjoy media over the device. Navigation is the highlight of this small tablet. Buy the maps, put them on a memory card and use Magnum as a car navigator.

Bottom line:The price might seem a little high. However, LACS is going to upgrade to the Android OS. For existing users, the upgrade would come for free.

SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB (` 38,000)

Appearance: If you ignored the iPad, which is not here in India, the Galaxy Tab was the tablet of the year. It is at the top because it is not just bright but beautiful too. This 7-inch tablet has been carved skillfully by Samsung’s boffins. The white and black covering looks good. It is shiny and attracts fingerprints but all the others do too.

Characteristics:Samsung has put in a lot of effort in this machine. The screen is top-notch. The touch works remarkably well. Swipes, pinches, taps, this tablet responds to all. It has a 1 GHz processor on board that reduces the boot time and application load times. Talking about which, Samsung has installed a lot of handy applications. It has a 3 MP camera that can record HD videos. For social entertainment junkies this one also has twin loud speakers and 3G connectivity.

Bottom line: Samsung has sculpted this to perfection. Period. This tablet is great for entertainment and business use. Who know you might even see it in the hands of one of the TV show anchors. Oh wait, a popular TV show host does use this tablet on his show even as he asks celebrities all sorts of wicked questions.

WESPRO EPAD(`7,999)

Appearance: This is a basic tablet—you could even call it a glorified e-reader. Clad in black and white, it looks like the Samsung Tab from a distance. It’s nice to hold and does not look shabby.

Characteristics:It might look like the Galaxy Tab but it certainly isn’t as powerful. The 7-inch screen size is nice to watch movies on. The Android OS loads quickly, but applications take their own sweet time. This tablet only has one camera on the front for video chatting. Since this tablet is not 3G-ready hence the camera can be put to use when connected to a Wi-Fi network. It doesn’t come preloaded with many apps. Guess, Wespro wants the users to visit Android Market to sate their app-etite .

Bottom line: This could at best be your first tablet, before you lay your hands on the big boys.

VEIWSONIC VIEWPAD 7(` 32,000)

Appearance: It looks no different than the tablets available in the market. It has the similar black finish with metal running along the edges, has the same squared-off edges and an oversized brick design like the OlivePad’s. Even the placement of the ports and controls is exactly the same. The speakers, microSD card, SIM, voice controls, the headphone port, microphone and mini USB ports are placed on the side trim.

Characteristics:Like most recent tablets, this one also runs on Android 2.2 and is powered by a 600 MHz processor. The in-built memory is just 512 MB but it can yoke a 32 GB microSD card easily. It comes pre-loaded with many great apps, and more can be downloaded from Android Market. It boasts a 7-inch touchscreen, dual cameras, and has features such as 3G-support, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. It has G-sensor, E-compass sensor and ambient light sensor.

Bottom line:It has all you look for in a tablet but at a price of` 32,000, you would feel cheated. The OlivePad offers everything this one does for much less. Now if only it had dual boot option or a better camera or more in-built memory...
