女作家殷慧芬是上海作家队伍中备受关注的人物之一,因为她创作的《汽车城》是建国以来第一部以轿车产业发展为背景的长篇小说。这部作品先在文学刊物发表就引起了很大反响,接着上海文艺出版社出版了单行本,第一版5000多册新书上市即抢购一空。2000年3月第二版仍然热销不衰,在当年上海读书节上被读者评为“我最喜爱的图书”。同时很快被摄制成22集电视连续剧在全国播映,得到广大观众的好评。

写作生涯从写市民生活开始

殷慧芬1949年出生于上海一个普通工人家庭,严厉的父亲虽然从小不准小慧芬看“坏书”、“闲书”,但全力支持女儿读书上进。在上山下乡高潮中她被安排去上海汽车齿轮厂当学徒工,一呆就是30年。漫长的工厂生活经历,使她饱尝了人生的酸甜苦辣,这一人生经历,为她后来写《汽车城》奠定了坚实的生活基础。

殷慧芬踏上文坛后,总是用一双善良、温情的眼睛观察着社会和人生,在她的笔下出现的,都是生活在里弄或工厂的普通人。

曾有记者问过殷慧芬,能走上文学道路是否与自己的人生经历有关?生活与写作对她很重要吗?殷慧芬说:很难说是为什么而写作,似乎这是一种命运,写作的意义也正在于此。我目睹过许多人的恩恩怨怨,滚滚红尘常令我午夜梦回,我还目睹过死亡、美的毁灭、青春自戕,可以说我的青春、梦想和爱情全部给了工厂。我在前几年写了城市、乡村、爱情,唯独没有写工厂生活。后来我终于明白,工厂生活对我将是精神深处的家园,青春情感的空间,繁杂人生的永恒背景,回避和不触及是不可能的,后来终于有了第一本小说集《欲望的舞蹈》,那是以工厂生活为背景的小说。

读了殷慧芬写的工厂生活小说,感觉她对工厂生活的熟悉程度是惊人的。她写普通工人的生活,抛弃了以往那种外在描写,总把笔触深入到她(她)们的内心以及围绕他(她)们周围的复杂的人际关系。她作品中的女主人公所具有的文化意蕴并不仅仅是红颜薄命。她长期工作、生活在工厂里,对厂里的一切都了如指掌,她把自己的工厂经历比喻为一条滚滚不息的生活长河。她就是这条长河里从容的漫游者,而她的作品就是那些精神漫游的情感记录。

曾有人评价殷慧芬是写上海市民底层生活的最好作家,殷慧芬说上海市民生活有特殊性,上海曾经是中国受西方文化浸淫最深的城市,中西文化的融合培育了市民崇尚自由从容的生活方式,它构成了上海文化的主体,形成了具有现代文明意识的市民阶层。这种可贵的市民精神在石库门老屋里、在工厂的女工身上延续下来了。

从市民故事到《汽车城》

殷慧芬定居在嘉定区,这是上海市的郊区,也是上汽集团许多企业的所在地。1968年她中学毕业后从市区进入这里的上海汽车齿轮厂当徒工,以后又当过统计员、宣传干部等。她从1981年开始创作,在她的小说中表现工厂生活的占了不少,从《厂医梅芳》到《衣飘飘兮袂举》,从《蜜枣》到《欲望的舞蹈》……尽管她从来不否认自己当过工人,但有人称她为“工人作家”,她却不以为然。她一再强调“工人作家”是指50年代那一批从工厂成长起来的作家的特有称呼。她说:“我的作品与他们的截然不同,我表现的工厂生活是市民生活的一部分,我的作品不是传统意义的工厂小说。如果称我为‘市民作家’我更乐意。”

殷慧芬一直在上汽集团工作,但要写好汽车行业的小说,需要把握汽车行业的全局。于是她决心“拜师学艺”。在一个偶然的机会,她找到了一位带她入门的关键人物,那就是《人民日报》高级记者林钢,这是一位气度非凡的长者。殷慧芬说:“1997年,我利用中国作家协会组织去北戴河疗养之际,乘在京城休息的空隙进行有关汽车行业方面的采访。当时我和林钢老师素不相识,通过朋友介绍,他出于一片爱才之心,那么大年纪带着我走访了很多汽车行业的上层人物。”

殷慧芬虽然在汽车行业工作、生活了整整30年,但真正动手写作《汽车城》这个长篇还是有点担心,究竟将它写成怎样的一部作品呢?当时有人劝她讨巧一点,把汽车行业作为背景,写写她最擅长的家庭故事以及儿女情长等等,可她没这样做,因为她的兴奋点不在这方面。

她说:“当初在中国的汽车制造业中,上海根本排不上号,而现在却成了最重要的轿车生产基地。大众公司生产的桑塔纳现在是成功了,但在合资的起步阶段,文化冲突造成的困境是外人很难想象的:外国人视质量为生命,而中国人则反感浪费,这种观念根深蒂固。《汽车城》有很大一部分篇幅就是描绘了这种困境和我们在困境中的进步。”

殷慧芬说了一个很有趣的观点:轿车和上海这个城市的平民精神密切相关,小时候大家叫小车为“小汽车”,后来叫“轿车”,都有种仰视的态度,现在一开口就是“叉头”,这就是相当平民化的心态。其实国外轿车原本就是为平民设计的,福特公司的宗旨就是要让普通的工人也买得起轿车,轿车也只有平民化了,才能形成生产规模。

殷慧芬以前的作品是温柔婉约的,而《汽车城》却显示出阳刚大气,很多评论者认为她的文笔变了,殷慧芬说:“这是我进入状态后自然而然倾泻而出的,没有丝毫的刻意追求。”

《汽车城》具有凝重的历史感,给读者以强烈的感情冲击。上海电影制片厂和中央电视手合作,已将《汽车城》制作成22集优秀电视连续剧在全国播放。上海广播电台也把它改编为八集广播连续剧《汽车人》播出,得到广大听众的喜爱。

家居嘉定看大上海

2002年随着电视剧《汽车城》在中央电视台的播映,当年因小说《汽车城》而名声大噪的殷慧芬又一次走入了人们的视野。这位当年为写《汽车城》险些右眼失明的女作家,新近又推出了她的新作《和陌生人跳舞》。这和《汽车城》一样,《和陌生人跳舞》的背景也是上海。

有人说,殷慧芬这位对上海有着异样感情的、始终关注这座城市发展的女作家,尽管她像“隐士”那样一直居住在远离上海市中心的嘉定郊区,然而她在作品中始终能把握住上海这座急速变化着的都市脉搏。记者问殷慧芬,上海是一个急速变化着的城市,你是如何让自己小说中的上海与现实中的上海步调保持一致的?她说:“有些东西是无论如何也不会变的,那是深植于上海城市精髓中的东西,就像上海弄堂是上海文化的所在,而不是高楼和新社区;其次,嘉定位于城市的边际,上海发生的都会波及到嘉定,只要你睁大眼睛,总会看见。再次,我相信不管如何变,弄堂一定还会存在下去,不会消失。据说现在有些弄堂在原有的基础上再改建,仍保留弄堂的风貌和味道,这很好。”

殷慧芬在一篇《家居上海嘉定》的散文中写道:“我们这个单位俗称市属,意即属上海市管辖,在嘉定属于客居。近年来单位职工收入尚可,购房十分踊跃。不要说上海市区过来的新老职工,不少嘉定本地职工也在上海购了新房,举家搬迁十分荣耀,反正上下班有班车接送,浩浩荡荡,一派兴旺。”她继续写道:“白驹过隙。二十世纪六七十年代的时候,我们正是少年不识愁滋味,一呼百应的年龄。一纸上级通知,几百号人就义无反顾地随着单位一起从上海市区迁居郊区嘉定了。”她自此一住就是30年。但她“市区上海人”情结还是难以排遣。不过不管怎么说,殷慧芬还是在嘉定买了房子。她说:“是在一个细雨霏霏的黄昏,我和丈夫驱车驶过嘉定新辟的墅沟路,路边的绿地和高楼依次而过,街道安静而整洁。眼前数排褐白相间的多层新楼,在沥沥的春雨中呈现出一种巧克力的温馨,显得端庄而妩媚。车子绕过新楼,我心里突然有一种莫名的触动,禁不住下车叩门而入。……在售楼处一问,房价比想象的还要便宜。……于是第一次在嘉定看房,我们就办了购房手续。现在想来,当时的心情完全是因为从心底里喜欢这房子。什么叶落归根啦,打回市区老家啦,攀比啦,种种身不由己的念头此时此刻忽然都消失殆尽了。何谓购房?有什么比自己喜欢的房子更重要!说也奇怪,30年后,我终于以一位永久居民的目光来看嘉定,才发现嘉定的种种好处。”

Shanghai Writer and Her Novel Wheels

Yin Huifen, a prominent Shanghai-based novelist, made her name first with a novel entitled Wheels. Yes, the novel bears a resemblance to the Canadian novelist Arthur Hailey’s 1978 namesake best seller set in an automobile town. Yes, Yin’s novel is about the country’s automaker in an auto town. But nothing else is the same. Yin’s novel is the five-thousand-year-old China’s very first novel depicting the burgeoning auto industry in the late 1990s.

The novel was first printed in a literary magazine in July, 1999 and caused a sensation. It was published as a book later in the same year. The first edition soon sold out and the second edition came out in March 2000 and was voted as the most popular book by readers in Shanghai. The novel was adapted to a 22-epidsode television play and screened nationwide in 2002.

Yin Huifen did not write the auto town novel by accident. Born into a workers?family in 1949, she grew up with good books and later worked in Shanghai Automobile Gear Plant for 30 years. She began to write in 1981 in her spare time. In the first few years as an author, her focus was on the urban and rural life. She never probed the auto industry itself, which she believed was her spiritual homeland. But gradually she came to learn how to depict the factory life she knew best.

Her career in the Shanghai Auto Group enabled her to get into an ideal position to watch Shanghai’s auto manufacturing takeoff in the booming years. But to write a novel, she needed to examine the whole picture of the nation’s auto industry. The opportunity came in 1997 when she met Lin Gang in Beidaihe, a sea resort where she was taking a vacation.As a senior journalist with People’s Daily, Lin took her to visit top leaders of the industry. In her planning period, someone suggested that the new book should be about romances and family stories she was most familiar with. She abstained from following the beaten track. She was excited by Shanghai’s automakers and she wanted to paint a whole picture. Now an established industrial presence in Shanghai, Volkswagen AG first arrived in town with a cultural shock to some local people. For example, the Germans pursue quality at all costs but the Chinese abhor waste. Wheels focuses on such cultural clashes and tells stories about how Chinese autoworkers came around to embrace new ideas and new attitudes.

Some critics believe Yin’s writing style displays an impressive energy in the novel, a landmark change from the tender and restrained way she used to write family stories. Some critics evaluate Yin as the best writer who depicts the Shanghai locals in the society’s lower strata. She declines to be regarded as a worker writer, a special phenomenon defining a group of writers in the 1950s and 1960s in Shanghai.

Now Yin and her husband have settled down in Jiading, a satellite town where some auto plants under the Shanghai Auto Group are located. Thirty years ago, she left downtown Shanghai behind and came to work in an auto plant in Jiading. Unlike many of her contemporaries who later tried hard to move back to downtown Shanghai, she and her husband have decided to stay in Jiading, a town pulsating strongly with the rhythm of the Shanghai’s auto industry.
