What every shopaholic worth their shopping bags should know is that in the two main shopping areas of NYC—Upper east side and the Midtown area—the merchandise differs even if the brands may be the same. So it might be a good idea to visit the same stores in both the areas. In these areas are some of the department stores that I like, Bloomingdales (59th Lex), Sax 5th avenue (49th/5th), henri Bendel(56th/5th), Barney’s (60th/Madison) and Bergdorf Goodman (5th/58th)—most of them famous the world over and for a good reason!

In Bloomingdales, the floors to head to are the lingerie and the denim floors. the denim range is from true religion to J Brand and any other that may enter the market. the other great floor is the cosmetic and fragrance floor, where you can get any brand and product under the sun. the Shoe Salon in Sax 5th is my favourite place for shoes. the service is personalised and brands are varied.

Shopping heaven

Walk from Madison avenue starting from 59th right through to the 69th. the roberto Cavalli store on 60th is definitely worth a visit so is the Giuseppe Zanotti on 64th. the multifloor store of BCBG and Max Azaria is also fun—you can pick up skirts, formal dresses and shoes that can meet an easier budget. I enjoy the Nicole Miller store where you get ruched silk dresses and, sometimes, stunning red carpet ones too. apart from Bloomingdales and Banana republic, Lexington avenue has some small boutiques as you walk down 59th to about the 50th. Dylan’s Candy Bar is an amazing store for all kinds of sweets to take home for the children. Bellini on 55th and Lexington usually has some interesting boots and shoes.

Insider tip

Fifth avenue at one time was the rodeo Drive of nyc but today it has Zara, armani exchange and Juicy which sprouted soon after recession. the most popular store is abercrombie & Fitch. there is always a line outside largely owing to the fact that they have good music and the sales people are simply drop dead gorgeous! (you get a polaroid shot with a bare-chested male model at the entrance.) however, the sister store Hollister, a couple of blocks down, has similar stuff cheaper and still has great music and people.

Better bargains

The 39th St is the fashion district of NyC. Between 5th and 6th avenues, on this street there are stores like Bebe, h&M and Forever 21. there are interesting stores like Strawberry and Rainbow, which are discounted and you may find a lot of tees and casuals. even though the merchandise is cheap and you get stuff for less than US$ 20, make sure your stuff does not ‘appear cheap’.

Latest trends

The Meatpacking District in the city is the trendiest. the alexander McQueen store is worth a look. Matthew Williamson next door has a ‘dream’ store and definitely worth a visit even if you don’t feel like burning a hole in your pocket. DvF is opposite and kinder on the wallet. at Soho, the walk from 8th and Broadway up to Spring St is quite delightful, and you will find a range of inexpensive and exclusive stores. heel accessories from Steve Madden add glamour to your shoes. Josie on Broadway has inexpensive everyday clothes as several other stores down this street.
