1. Poor language learning environment

In our oral English classes, our teacher always creates suppositional “context of situation”, such as shopping center, hospital, hotel, etc. Why should we do this? Because there isn’t the real situation to practice our oral English. What’s more, the specialized oral English classes are not common in junior school. If any, time is limited in class. In addition, a lot of schools in China do not have enough facilities such as English laboratory, LCD, and other multimedia. So the students need suitable advice they haven’t to improve their oral English.

2. Poor quality of language teachers

Some first English teachers have poor pronunciation and fragmented English knowledge. This resulted in the students’ pronunciation and tones are surprising. Their expressions are not clear, and then they are hardly comprehended. If a teacher’s spoken English is not good, how can he help his students to improve their spoken English? The quality of English teachers is the key in English teaching which impact directly on the English quality of students.

3. Test-oriented teaching

To pass the middle school entrance examination is the junior school students’ task. So study is just around the text-book; homework is around exercise problems and papers; oral practice is around final oral test. Everything here is for the last exam, not for improving students’ oral English.

Lacking in knowledge or information

1. The volume of reading is not enough

As the saying goes“ He that reads more knows much”. In fact, most students are indulged in love stories and martial arts novels, not concentrated on personality profile, historical novels and scientific stories. In that case, the students surely lack in useful knowledge or information in oral practice. They just communicate each other with the old topics (Introductions, Telephone, Weather, Invitation, Having dinner, Shopping, Seeing a doctor, Vacations, Entertainment and Sports).

2. Pay no attention to current social events

Some students boarded in the school. They have no canal to gain the current social events. Other students are busy with their study, paying no attention to them. The rest don’t think those events have some connection with themselves. Finally, few of our students know something about events out of school. They only have the dated topics as above.

3. The life on campus is too monotonous

Whether the school work or future job weighed them down, they have no much free time to take part in many activities, make friends or make other efforts to speak English in school. They haven’t chance to experience different experiences in our complex life. So when they are asked about some ideas on something, they will feel puzzled, and usually cannot answer it fluently.

Solutions to the problems

Firstly, in order to enhance students’ interest in oral English, our parents can set a positive language environment around your children. You can often invite your foreign friends home or take your children to the English corner held in some activity center. But if your children say no, don’t enforce them. Remember that study or not is their own business, you should let them make decisions on their own. Once your children start learning language with interests, everything will be easy. They will practice spoken English or other languages independently. If they find they are still poor in English, they can add some related cultural knowledge via watching no-marquee film, reading foreign classics of original edition and so on. They will gradually love the different customs and civilizations aboard. And there will be more topics available.Teacher should also give a hand to students to build up their study aim and future study aim. Let them know that being able to speak a second language would be useful in travel or in pursuing other interests or career goals. Let them regain the motivations for oral practice.

Secondly, in our Chinese universities, one class is 50 minutes. The teacher would take 5 minutes to start the class. 45 minutes left is for the whole class. If there are 35 of them, each of them only has less than 2 minutes to practice according to the old ways. Undoubtedly we can do nothing in this 1 minute. If we divide these 35 students into 4 or 5 groups, then each of them would get 5 or 6 more minutes to speak. As our class is less than 50 minutes, it’s no doubt a very beneficial way to raise efficiency and to save time in this way. In order to improve the language learning environment, it’s a must to develop extracurricular activities in class. The teacher is asked to create the comfortable environment to do the teaching learning process. He should firstly make good use of these activities, and then walk into the team discussions, give students encouragement and help. At last, he should check their work out and give them impersonal appraises.
