Give me that chocolate!
With only a few weeks to go until Christmas, here’s something to really get people in the spirit: a tree that’s 10 metres tall and made entirely of chocolate. The sweet creation towers inside the Patrick Roger Factory in the suburbs of Paris. It weighs four tons. That’s around 800,000 standard-size chocolate bars, and it took a month to build. And Patrick Roger, the man in charge of it all, says it was difficult to piece together.
Patrick: (via translator) To achieve this kind of architecture, because this really is a piece of architecture, we used a sort of 1)cavity to make the chocolate strong enough, because there is very strong vertical pressure.
But it’s not just done to show off his skills as a 2)chocolatier. There is a real spirit of Christmas behind it. The tree’s going to feature in a 3)telethon to help raise money for research into 4)neuromuscular diseases.
Give me luxury or give me death!
Christmas, a time of giving, of buying each other gifts, of shopping, of spending money, although the recession’s put a damper on that. Nobody’ll be getting anything in Britain, but in the United Arab Emirates it’s a different story.
Janet Abrams (Emirates Palace Hotel): This year we’ve partnered with Mr. Khalifa Khoury, who is the Chairman of Style Gallery, and they have provided us with $11 million worth of precious gems and jewellery, and that enables us to go for the Guinness World Record for the world’s most expensively dressed tree.
Good for you! Janet Abrams from the Emirates Palace Hotel giving you something to cheer your heart as you munch on your little turkey and pull your 5)Netto 6)crackers. The 13-metre-high diamond decorated tree, placed under the main gold-covered dome of the luxury hotel in Abu Dhabi. That’s the same place that brought us this, the world’s first ATM machine that dispenses gold bars. So the tree’s a little low-key by comparison, but Janet hopes it’ll do the job.
Janet: What we have tried to do is to give everybody who visits and everybody who’s staying here a chance to be part of something really special and unique.
Tourists and visitors stopping to have their picture taken in front of the golden tree. And if you’re thirsty, the Emirates Palace does a mean cappuccino topped with real gold flakes.
If there is 80,000 spoonful of ice cream…
Some students in Taiwan have made a tree entirely from plastic spoons, 80,000 in total, making the tree 12 metres high. A local branch of KFC donated the spoons. The six youngsters won a competition at a local university. And, unlike a traditional tree, you can walk inside it. If you’re worried that these spoons are going to be binned after the festive period is over, don’t worry. They’re going to be recycled.
