Kobe Got Game

Q: Are you a big gamer?

Kobe Bryant: I’m a competitive 1)individual, so if there’s a competition involved, I’m all for it. I came from an extremely competitive household, and games between me and my cousins would get 2)ruthless. Everything in my family was about 3)bragging rights, so if you could beat someone using the worst team in the game, that was the best. It was all about challenges.

Q: What was going through your head when you were scoring 81注?

KB: Everything was happening in slow motion for me, and you just really want to stay in that moment. You don’t want to step outside of yourself and think about what is going on because then you are going to lose that 4)rhythm. You just need to keep going, then at the end of the game, I really just felt 5)numb. I couldn’t really 6)grasp what had just happened.

Q: Talking about team 7)chemistry, we all know that chemistry can affect the team in both positive and negative ways, but how important is chemistry when it comes to winning in the NBA?

KB: You can’t win unless you have chemistry, that’s what it’s about. You play 82 games to build chemistry, to build rhythm, to build togetherness, that way once you reach the 8)playoffs, you’re all 9)on the same page. That’s what makes the game so cool……is that you have the opportunity to do that and build your chemistry. We went to the playoffs with a lot of10)momentum and played extremely well, and I think we’re going to carry that momentum into this season.

Q: What is it about your personality that enables you to win games?

KB: You know what, you’re just playing basketball. You’re just playing basketball and all you need to do is remember that you’re just playing the game you’re been playing since you were a kid. I’re been playing since I was three years old. A lot of times, you enter these professional levels and the pressure and expectations take the fun out of it. You start worrying instead of just playing. You need to get back to just playing the game and have a good time at it. When you do that, the ball goes in.

Q: 11)ESPN recently ran the 12)segment about how you helped out with the Make A Wish 13)Foundation, how important is it for you to give back to your little fans through 14)charity?

KB: It’s very important. These kids here are facing some serious challenges in their lives, and you ask them what their wish is, and whatever it is, that’s their one wish. That’s 15)incredible that meeting me is someone’s dream, so to be able to grant those wishes is truly special. That was a great series ESPN did. I think it showed the beauty of sports and what sports can do to make a difference in people’s lives. That’s what it’s all about.
