Hermes was the messenger(信使,使者) of the gods. Son of Zeus and Maia, the eldest daughter of a Titan called Atlas. He was by far the fastest runner of all the Olympians.
As a messenger god, Hermes was naturally the god of roads and door ways.He was not only the protector of travelers but also the guide for the dead to Hades(冥府).
Hermes was a talented inventor1. His inventions were the musical scale(音阶), weights and measures, and various sportive games.By stretching2 cow gut( 肠胃) across a tortoise shell, he created the lyre(里拉琴), which he gave to his half brother Apollo as a compensation (补偿 ) for a cow theft:he stole Apollo's cow on the very day he was born, therefore hewasalsothegodof thieves and traders. You see, he traded his lyre for Apollo's cow,and this reflected the primitive3 mode of trade.
Being one of the youngest children of Zeus, Hermes was generally represented as a very young man, sometimes as a young athlete. He was fre- quentlydepictedasabeardlessmanwearing winged sandals4 and tunic(短袖束腰外衣). On his head was a very stylish5 combination of helmet-of-darkness and sun hat,in his hand was a caduceus (节杖), or "herald's staff", which was a wand(棒,杖) traditionally used by a herald (messenger). Hermes' s caduceus (手杖) was originally a willow wand entwined(盘绕) with ribbons. Later the ribbons evolved6 into snakes. Hermes's symbol was the snaky caduceus.
