Hermes was the messenger（信使，使者） of the gods. Son of Zeus and Maia, the eldest daughter of a Titan called Atlas.He was by far the fastest runner of all the Olympians.

As a messenger god, Hermes was naturally the god of roads and door ways.He was not only the protector of travelers but also the guide for the dead to Hades(冥府).

Hermes was a talented inventor1. His inventions were the musical scale(音阶)， weights and measures, and various sportive games.By stretching2 cow gut（ 肠胃） across a tortoise shell, he created the lyre(里拉琴), which he gave to his half brother Apollo as a compensation （补偿 ） for a cow theft:he stole Apollo's cow on the very day he was born,therefore hewasalsothegodof thieves and traders. You see, he traded his lyre for Apollo's cow,and this reflected the primitive3 mode of trade.

Being one of the youngest children of Zeus, Hermes was generally represented as a very young man,sometimes as a young athlete.He was fre- quentlydepictedasabeardlessmanwearing winged sandals4 and tunic(短袖束腰外衣). On his head was a very stylish5 combination of helmet-of-darkness and sun hat,in his hand was a caduceus (节杖), or "herald's staff", which was a wand(棒，杖) traditionally used by a herald (messenger). Hermes' s caduceus (手杖) was originally a willow wand entwined(盘绕) with ribbons. Later the ribbons evolved6 into snakes. Hermes's symbol was the snaky caduceus.

作为宙斯最小的孩子之一，赫耳墨斯总是被描绘为一个十分年轻的男子，有时也则被视为年轻的运动员。他还经常被描绘成一个没有胡须的年轻人，脚着带翼的飞鞋，身着短袖束腰外衣。他头戴一半是隐形头盔、一半是太阳帽的时髦头饰，手持一柄节杖。节杖是一种使者(信使)惯用的标志性的手杖。赫耳墨斯的节杖原本是丝带缠绕的柳树枝，后来丝带演变成了两条蟒蛇。赫耳墨斯的象征正是这种蟒蛇缠绕的使节杖(又称“双蛇杖”)。
