Beware of undertaking too much at the start. Be content with quite a little. Allow for accidents. Allow for human nature, especially your own.

A failure or so, in itself, would not matter, if it did not 9)incur a loss of self-esteem and of selfconfidence. But just as nothing succeeds like success, so nothing fails like failure. Most people who are ruined are ruined by attempting too much. Therefore, in setting out on the immense enterprise of living fully and comfortably within the narrow limits of 24 hours a day, let us avoid at any cost the risk of an early failure. I will not agree that, in this business at any rate, a glorious failure is better than a 10)petty success. I am all for the petty success. A glorious failure leads to nothing; a petty success may lead to a success that is not petty.

So let us begin to examine the budget of the day’s time. You say your day is already full to 11)overflowing. How? You actually spend in earning your livelihood—how much? Seven hours, on the average? And in actual sleep, seven? I will add two hours, and be generous. And I will 12)defy you to 13)account to me on the spur of the moment for the other eight hours.

劲十足,一旦对所收获的感到不满足,就会要求得到更多,甚至于想要大山移动,江河改道,不干到汗水涔涔就难以满足。但在多数时候,在你感到汗流浃背、精疲力尽的瞬间,最初的干劲便一落千丈,转眼间荡然无存。在挣扎之中甚至来不及说上一句:“我受够了。”

勿在起初着手时要求过多,要满足于任何微小的收获。要预料到一切可能的变故,估计人类固有的特性,尤其是你自己的。

遇到一两次失败时,只要这种挫折不至于损害你的自尊与自信,就没什么大不了的。恰如“一事如意,事事顺利;一事失败,事事不利”。大多数陷于崩溃的人往往是由于贪求过多而造成的。因此,在一天24小时短暂而有限的时间里,在你着手创建一个充实而舒畅的生活这个庞大的事业中,无论如何都要避免导致过早的失败。我从不赞同那种“光荣的失败胜于渺小的成功”的说法。我更倾向于获得渺小的成功。因为看似光彩的失败带来的是一无所获,而渺小的胜利可能会导致巨大的成功。
