My Friends in Jiaxing, Zhejiang

By Kawasoe Hideco (Japan)

In all probability, I fell in love with China on the day when I turned five. That day, my father clothed me in a pretty Chinese dress. I love Erhu music. I like the Peking Opera play “Farewell to My Concubine”. The Chinese poetry fascinates me. I drink Chinese tea every day. My Chinese friends teach me how to speak Chinese, cook Chinese cuisine, and play Taiji sword. Moreover, my home is literarily a small museum of Chinese ornaments. A friend jokes that a visit to my home is like a visit to China.

It is true that everything in my life is somewhat associated with China. In particular, I have friends in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province. Ye Qin is the vice schoolmaster of Jiaxing First Middle School. In 2010, a year that marked the 20th anniversary of the founding of friendly relations between Jiaxing City of Zhejiang Province and my hometown Fuji in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture, she brought 10 students to Fuji for a visit. She has big eyes and a round face. Her smiling look from behind the eyeglasses is most sweet. She looked like a great mother and all the students trusted her. Of the ten students, two boys came to stay at my home.

My two sons visited Jiaxing respectively in 1998 and 2000 as members of Fuji Friendship Delegation. They visited schools and homes there and they were warmly and graciously received. It was the first foreign city they ever visited. For Jin Chaohui and Zhong Yihan, aged 17 and 15 respectively, who stayed at my home, it was also their first ever visit to a foreign city. And they were of about the same age when my sons visited Jiaxing. Jin and Zhong are sunny and cordial boys.

In order to meet the two youngsters, my twosons came back home. They fetched out the photos they had taken in Jiaxing and talked about their unforgettable experience in Jiaxing. The two Chinese boys talked about the great changes Jiaxing was undertaking, their eyes bright and their enthusiasm infectious. We were touched by their account. Though they had just arrived, we felt as if we had been friends for years. I felt I was like mother of the four. That evening, I asked them to give me their laundry so that I could do it for them. To my surprise, they said they would rather do their own laundry. “Our teacher says we do our own laundry especially when we are abroad. Your sons did their own laundry while they were studying in Beijing, didn’t they?” I was touched by their cordiality and upbringing. They stayed at my home for only three days, but we learned a lot from them and a respect and admiration for Ye Qin and their parents and their effective way of teaching the young grew warmly in me.

On the day of farewell, I said to Ye Qin that the teenagers from her school behaved like adults and that they were really good boys. She smiled and then said to the two boys: “Say goodbye to your Japanese mama.” We hugged and promise to meet again. Though we had been together only for three days, we wept at the moment of parting each other. I also said goodbye to Ye Qin. Back home they wrote me a letter with photos, tea and a music disc that my sons loved.

In order to see them again, I decided to participate in the commemorative activities to be held in Jiaxing in celebration of the 20th-year relations between Jiaxing and Fuji. In October I arrived in Jiaxing. I saw Ye Qin again after an entertainment show. Model workers across the city were honored on the stage. Ye Qin was one of the model workers. I was in the first row clapping my hands. She saw me, her big eyes conveying gladness to me. I was very happy to see her, a woman with dedication to education and loved by children.

Then I met with Jin Chaohui and Zhong Yihan and visited their homes and met with their parents. My father used to say to me that there were many Chinese who cared for friendship and my experience tells me it is true indeed.

In the summer of 2011 two students from Jiaxing First Middle School will visit Japan and stay at my home. I expect to make more friends from Jiaxing. The expectation is warming my heart while I write these words here.

How lucky I am to have friends from Jiaxing! I sincerely wish Zhejiang Province prosperity and growth and wish the people of Zhejiang happiness. I pray the friendship between China and Japan will deepen.
