’Twas注1 the night of Thanksgiving, but I just couldn’t sleep,
I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned[召唤]—the dark meat and white注2,
But I fought off the temptation with all of my might[力气].
I tossed and I turned with sweet anticipation[预期],
As the thought of a snack became infatuation[迷恋].
So I raced to the kitchen, flung[猛推] open the door
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies[好吃的东西] galore[很多].
I gobbled up[狼吞虎咽] turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles[泡菜] and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling[胀] so plump[胖的] and so round,
’Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But I managed to yell as I soared[翱翔] past the trees:
Happy eating to all! Pass the cranberries[越橘], please!
May your stuffing[填料] be tasty, may your turkey be plump,
May your potatoes and gravy[肉汁] have nary[没有] a lump[块],
May your yams[甘薯] be delicious, may your pies take the prize,
May your Thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs[大腿]!
我试过倒数，我试过数羊。
那些剩菜向我招手——各种各样的肉，
但我竭尽全力对抗诱惑。
我怀着甜蜜的期待辗转反侧，
来一份点心的想法越来越令人着迷。
于是我奔向厨房，将门一把推开
注视着冰箱里满满当当的美食。
我贪婪地大嚼火鸡和黄油土豆、
泡菜和胡萝卜、豆子和西红柿。
我发现自己胀了起来，变得又圆又胖，
直到突然之间离地升起。
我撞破了天花板，飘向天空
满嘴的布丁，满手的馅饼。
但掠过林间时，我还在大叫：
大家吃得开心！请把越橘递给我！
愿你的填料好吃美味，愿你的火鸡肥硕多肉，
愿你的土豆和肉汁没有凝块，
愿你的甘薯香甜可口，愿你的馅饼赢得大奖，
愿你的感恩节大餐不会落在大腿上！
注1：相当于“it was”，一般出现在诗歌中。
注2：“dark meat”指的是禽类经过烧煮之后呈现深色的肉，如腿肉。“white meat”就是我们常说的白肉，可以指禽类某些部位的肉在烹饪后呈浅色，如胸脯肉，也可以指其他白肉，如小牛肉等。
