If you’re looking for an escape from Barcelona as far away from a beach as possible, head to the parador de cardona, a mediaeval castle hotel built on a promontory replete with a tower, a romanesque church and even home to a friendly ghost. The impressive 9th century fortress affords a stunning view of the verdant landscape that’s fed by river cardoner and of the tiny hamlets below. Today over 90 paradores located in nature reserves and historic buildings, such as castles, palaces, convents and even monasteries, dot the countryside of spain.

FOOD

The old fashioned dining room is bedecked with striped chairs and white starched table linen. For vegetarians choices are limited with a scanty variety in starters, soups and mains. For meat lovers, however, catalan specialties are recommended: Aubergine Terrine with pig’s Trotters, selection of sausages and cheese; meat and game paired with wild mushrooms such as the quirkily named Saffron milk caps, Blue Spot Knights and copper Spikes. Another recommendation is the Braised Lamb Shoulder. There is a medieval style bar too where you can knock back a few beers and even watch sports on television.

ROOMS

The rooms are quite charming in an old-fashioned way with catalan styled furnishings reflecting a long bygone era. Thankfully, the bathrooms are no mediaeval pits but slick, modern outposts with nicely perfumed toiletries. If you’re lucky you might get a room with a four poster bed as i did. expect the usual trappings: a small TV, a mini-bar, a telephone and a safety deposit box in the room. It is advisable to travel light as it is a castle after all; though there is an elevator, the rooms are located in different nooks and over different levels even on a single floor, thus carrying heavy luggage becomes bit of a hindrance.

FACILITIES

The best part of staying in a castle in the wilderness is that you have ample time to explore every cranny and crevice that tells a tale. Explore the 11th century tower and the stunning romanesque church. If you’re a thrill seeker, keep your ears open for tales about its legendary ghost who makes contact with women only. If this doesn’t interest you, then the hotel offers a gym, a sauna room, and a shop with quirky items on sale. This aside, it has meeting and conference rooms that can host a sizeable number of people. You can also step out to visit the local town and admire its romanesque architecture, plus visit the Salt mountain and the Salt mines.
