Emma Thompson, whose first 1)screenplay ?an 2)adaptation of Sense and Sensibility ?won the 1995 Oscar, returns to screenwriting with Nanny McPhee, a film adaptation of the urse Matilda?books by Christianna Brand. Thompson, the only person to have won an Oscar for both acting and writing, also plays the title role in Nanny McPhee.

In this dark and witty fable, Thompson 3)portrays a person of ugly appearance and magical powers. She enters the household of a 4)widower Mr. Brown (Colin Firth), and attempts to 5)tame his seven extremely ill-behaved children. The children, led by the eldest boy Simon, have managed to drive away 17 previous nannies, and they are certain that they will have no trouble with this one. But as Nanny McPhee takes control, they begin to notice that their bad behavior now leads, magically, to some 6)startling 7)consequences.

Nanny McPhee's 8)influence also extends to the family's deeper problems, including Mr. Brown's sudden and 9)inexplicable attempts to find a new wife; an announcement by the 10)domineering Aunt Adelaide that she wants to take one of the children away; and the sad and secret longings of their 11)scullery maid. As the children's behavior begins to change, Nanny McPhee's 12)arresting face appears to change as well, raising even more questions about this mysterious stranger whom the children and their father have come to love.
