There was a man called Yin Hao (303-356) in the Dong Jin Dynasty (316-420). He was born in a rich family and spent a lot of time reading while he was young. People were often impressed by his clear and logical talks. Due to his fame and talents, he was appointed as Jianwu General and later the governor of Yangzhou.

Yin Hao was a scholar and was not good at military affairs. Therefore, in the year of 350, when he was ordered to lead a northern expedition, he failed in almost every battle. He was therefore demoted and became a civilian in today’s Xin’an in Zhejiang Province.

Yin Hao had a nephew called Han Kangbo, who was very smart. He studied the strategies of commanding troops from Yin Hao, and after a while, he thought he had already grasped the essence and felt very proud of himself. He was then often found to talk big in front of people.

Seeing that Han Kangbo had an exaggerated opinion of his own abilities, Yin Hao criticized him, saying “You have just learned one or two words from me, and how can you be so self-righteous?” Hearing this, Han Kangbo felt terribly ashamed and since then, he became modest and eager to learn.
