gingerbread houses, medieval walls and tumescent towers, cobbled lanes and steeples and spires—tallinn in Estonia is a city steeped in the old and the ancient. three medieval merchant houses have been amalgamated and lovingly refurbished to create a boutique hotel called the three sisters which is now a five star property and a member of the Relais and Chateaux group.

location and design

Pikk street, on which the hotel is located, was one of the tallinn’s main arteries in the Middle ages. the hotel has an incredible location with a wealth of historical sights on its doorsteps: it’s just next to the squat Fat Margaret, part of the city’s medieval fortifications and st Olaf’s church, which used to be the tallest building at one time. It’s a short stroll to the Old town square. the 23 rooms at the three sisters are dramatically different both in shape and design because of its 14th century origins. there is architectural genius at play merging all the different elements and making the maze of walkways, galleries and staircases flow in a linear fashion. the furnishings, colour schemes, and the lighting differ in each of the three sisters. the use of chrome, plastic and glass has been minimised and a lot of wood has been used instead. local carpenters have replicated staircases, window shutters and doors in medieval designs. I love the chalky walls, the 600-year-old wooden beams and high ceilings which lend a special character to the hotel. Each room offers small surprises—antique canopy beds with muslin drapes, kilims on the floor, an old fashioned bathtub in a corner of a bedroom behind a small screen, le Corbusier chairs, and even an antique Estonian piano. some original elements like frescoes which were uncovered under layers of paint and wall paper have been retained.

the Wine Bar has won the Wine spectator award and the restaurant Bordoo has its personal rendition of Estonian and Baltic cuisine. Bordoo is run by executive chef t?nis siigur, one of Estonian’s greatest culinary talents. On the menu were local specialties like Nordic sea broth, Juniper and quail and duck. the restaurant offers experiences like a romantic dinner in the Piano suite with a personalised menu and private pianist.

staff and service

the 45 employees of the hotel come from all over Estonia and have been extensively trained. some personal touches go a long way: a shoe shine service, a masseur and masseuse on call, the option of having breakfast in your room and a reception desk which helps you plan your outings.
