Looking for William Edward Soothill： Missionary and Modem China

William Edward Soothill， British， was a Methodist missionary to China who later became Professor of Chinese literafure at Oxford University and a leading British sinologist. Soothill’s experiences can be regarded as the epitome of the most turbulent periods of China during the late 1900s to the early 2000s， and his name is closely related to many celebrities in Chinese history such as Hu Shi and Cai Yuanpei.
Soothill had spent the best time of his life in China， but few people know his stories. In his early twenties， he travelled from Britain to China， and settled in China when his child was born there. He spent over twenty years working as a missionary in Wenzhou China. He founded a hospital， a training college， several schools and two hundred preaching stations there. He studied Wenzhou dialect， compiled a pocket dictionary containing 4，000 commonly-used characters for non-Chinese speakers， and helped introduce the Chinese classics to the West. Soothill became President of the Imperial University at Sha’anxi later. Upon his return to Britain in 1920 he was appointed Professor of Chinese at Oxford University. Besides， he was also the representative of the Sino-Britain Boxer Indemnity Board and contributed to the returning of Boxer Indemnity to China. Su Huilian’s daughter， who settled in China after growing up， founded PeiHua Girls’ School - the alma mater of Lin Huiyin.
About the author
Shen Jia was born in Wenzhou in 1969. He has attained the degree of Master of Arts at Zhejiang University and MBA at China Europe International Business School. He was a journalist， and now serves as Director of Nengjin Public Foundation. His representative works include Ordinary People， Study of Letters between Xia Chengxi and Xie Yucen.

They were collectively called “72 sainted disciples of Confucius”. Historical documents reveal that they were loyal followers， practitioners and disseminators of Confucian thoughts. After the death of Confucius， his disciples “traveled around vassal states， some becoming high-ranking officials like prime ministers and others scholar-bureaucrats” （quoted from Biography of Confucian Scholars in Historical Records）.
The portraits of the 73 figures included in this book were drawn by young painter Zhang Xiaofang， who got the inspiration from Portraits of Chinese Historical Figures published by Qilu Press in 2002.
