Most of the western festivals are simple to predict[预知]. They either occur[出现] on the same date each year or at a fixed position such as “the first Sunday.?Easter on the other hand is what is called a moveable feast as the date changes every year. Easter Sunday can fall on any date from March 22 to April 25. And this year, it is on April 8.

The reason for this variation[变化] in the date of Easter is its origins[起源] in pagan[异教的] festivals. The date is actually based on the lunar calendar[阴历] rather than our more well-known solar[太阳的] one. The Christian festival of Easter celebrates the resurrection[复苏] of Christ. Churches are filled with flowers, and there are special hymns[赞美诗] and songs. However, long before this, pagans celebrated the changing of the seasons and the renewed[更新] life of Earth at this time of year.

The Easter Bunny and Easter Eggs are the most favorable symbols on Easter. The rabbit was the most fertile[能繁殖的] animal known in ancient times and it serves as a symbol of new life during the spring season. The Germans brought the symbol of the Easter Bunny to America. Easter has been widely celebrated in America since the Civil War.

As recognizable as the Easter Bunny, the Easter Egg predates[提早] the Christian holiday of Easter. From the earliest times, the egg was a symbol of rebirth in most cultures. Eggs were often wrapped in gold leaf. Today, children hunt colored eggs and place them in Easter baskets along with the modern version of real Easter eggs ?those made of plastic or chocolate candy.
